Recall notice
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 23-262
On 16 August 2023 the CPSC announced the recall of about 1.56 million Gree-made dehumidifiers, sold under the Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze brands and manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. The notice states that the dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards, and reports at least 23 fires, 688 overheating incidents and $168,000 in property damage. Consumers are told to immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact Gree for a refund. If your machine is old, check its model number against the CPSC list before you spend time troubleshooting it.

Common questions
My dehumidifier is running, but the bucket never fills up. What's wrong?
Usually nothing is broken. The most common causes are a humidity target set above the room's real humidity, so the compressor never switches on; a room that is too cold, which lets frost form on the coil and stops moisture removal; and a connected drain hose sending the water somewhere other than the bucket, which is normal, not a fault. This page checks each of these in order, along with the filter and the clearance around the unit, before it tells you when to call for service.
Why does my dehumidifier stop collecting water when the room gets cold?
ENERGY STAR states that frost can form on a compressor dehumidifier's coil once the air temperature drops below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the frost can make the compressor cycle on and off repeatedly without removing moisture from the air. ENERGY STAR's own guidance is to switch the unit off and let it defrost before you use it again. A dehumidifier running in a cold basement or an unheated garage is one of the most common reasons this page exists.
How cold is too cold for a dehumidifier?
ENERGY STAR's own figure of 65 degrees Fahrenheit, around 18 degrees Celsius, is a general guidance threshold for compressor dehumidifiers as a category, not a rating for your specific model. Two brands read for this page publish their own numbers for their own products: Frigidaire gives 41 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit as its operating range, and Danby notes that frost can form on its own models below around 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Read your own documentation for the figure that applies to your machine, and consider a unit rated for lower temperatures if your space stays cold.
The bucket is empty, but I have a drain hose connected. Is that normal?
Yes. A connected continuous drain hose sends the water to a floor drain, a sump pump, or a container instead of to the bucket, so an empty bucket is exactly what you should see. Look for water at the open end of the hose instead. I set a humidity level, but the dehumidifier barely runs. Why?
The target may be set above the room's actual relative humidity, and a compressor dehumidifier stops removing moisture once the room reaches the target you gave it. Could my dehumidifier be too small for my room?
It is worth checking. A dehumidifier sized for a small room removes little visible water in a large or very damp space, even while running correctly, and the difference can look like a fault.
