Summary

A stand mixer beater that sits too high leaves flour and butter unmixed at the bottom of the bowl. A beater that sits too low hits the bowl, chips the white coating off the beater, and can wear the bowl finish. KitchenAid designs a single small screw into most of its mixers to fix both faults, and names it the beater height adjustment screw.

This page uses only KitchenAid's own published instructions and gives the visual check method they publish: unplug the mixer, turn the screw a small amount, then look at the gap. KitchenAid's own documents describe the same screw two different ways. The general product-help article 'Adjust the Beater to Bowl Clearance' (kitchenaid-adjust-beater-to-bowl-clearance, accessed 2026-08-04) gives bowl-lift mixers as: 'turning screw (A) counterclockwise to raise the bowl and clockwise to lower the bowl.' The owner's manual for a current bowl-lift mixer, 'Stand Mixer - Bowl Lift' W11378207 Rev C (kitchenaid-bowl-lift-owners-manual-w11378207, accessed 2026-08-04), gives the same kind of mixer as: 'Turn the screw slightly counterclockwise (left) to raise the beater, or clockwise (right) to lower it.' The KitchenAid UK tilt-head FAQ (kitchenaid-uk-adjust-tilt-head-clearance, accessed 2026-08-04) uses the beater wording too: 'Turn the screw slightly counterclockwise (left) to raise the beater or clockwise (right) to lower the beater.' The general product-help article also states directly that the mechanism is not consistent across the product line: 'But for some of the bowl-lift models manufactured after April 2003, the adjustment screw must be rotated in the opposite direction. When to use a professional

Do not try this adjustment on a mixer made before 1980. These mixers have no adjustment screw. Contact an authorized KitchenAid service facility for these mixers.

Stop if the gap does not change after you turn the screw both directions. Stop if the bowl lock lever will not lock after the adjustment. Contact an authorized KitchenAid service facility.

Do not force the screw. Do not open the motor head. Only a qualified technician must do work inside the motor head or the gearbox.

Common questions

Why does my KitchenAid mixer leave flour or butter unmixed at the bottom of the bowl?

KitchenAid's own troubleshooting material gives this a direct cause: if the beater is too high, it cannot reach and incorporate the ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. The fix is the beater height adjustment screw covered on this page, not a different mixing technique. Before you adjust anything, also confirm the bowl is fully seated and locked, since a bowl that has not snapped into place can sit unevenly and mimic the same symptom.

My mixer beater is hitting or scraping the bottom of the bowl. What's wrong?

KitchenAid describes this as the beater sitting too low, and warns that it can chip the white coating off the bottom of the beater over time. This page's adjustment turns the same screw the other way to open the gap slightly. Stop using the mixer for heavy loads until you have made the adjustment, since a beater that is striking the bowl is also a beater that is wearing against it.

What is the KitchenAid dime test?

KitchenAid names a 'Dime Test' for checking beater clearance in a stainless bowl, and its own troubleshooting page states plainly that it works for stainless bowls only, not glass or ceramic. What KitchenAid does not publish, in the text of its support articles, is the exact hand motion of the test itself — that is only shown in a video on their site. This page therefore uses the visual gap check KitchenAid does describe in text, rather than walking you through a coin test we cannot quote.

Which way do I turn the adjustment screw to fix my mixer?

There is no single answer, and this page does not print one as if there were. KitchenAid's own general support article and its own current owner's manual describe the same kind of screw in two different ways, and the support article separately states that the direction reverses on some bowl-lift mixers built after April 2003. The safe method, and the one KitchenAid itself gives as a fallback, is to turn the screw a small amount, check the result, and turn it the other way if the gap did not improve.

Can I adjust a mixer with a glass or ceramic bowl the same way?

The screw and the turning method are the same, but KitchenAid states that the clearance will be slightly different for a glass bowl because of how glass is manufactured, and tells the reader to adjust without a coin until the mixing performance is satisfactory. Judge a glass or ceramic bowl by how well it mixes rather than by a coin sitting flat against the bottom.

My mixer is very old. Can I still adjust it?

KitchenAid's own material states that mixers built before 1980 have no adjustment screw at all, and that an authorized service facility has to make this adjustment on those machines. If you cannot find a screw on an older mixer, that is very likely the reason, and it is not something to force open.

Is it normal for the beater to almost touch the bottom of the bowl?

Yes. KitchenAid states that a correctly adjusted flat beater will not strike the bottom or the side of the bowl, which means the gap is meant to be small, not generous. The target is a beater that just clears the bowl, close enough to fully incorporate the ingredients without ever making contact.
