Summary

Scale builds inside any appliance that boils water, and in an iron it announces itself the worst possible way: brown water spat onto a white shirt. The fix is a cycle the manufacturer already built into the machine — Philips calls it Calc-Clean, Bosch calls it Calc'nClean, most others just call it self-clean — and it works by flushing boiling water and scale out through the steam vents into a sink. It takes about twenty minutes of work, spread around two waits for the iron to cool.

The thing you will read everywhere else is to fill the tank with vinegar, and you should not do that on the strength of a web page, including this one. Philips lists vinegar by name among the things that must never go in the tank, alongside descaling agents and other chemicals, because they may cause water spitting, brown staining or damage. Russell Hobbs says an additive will destroy the anti-scale agent. Bosch's own iron manual says not to descale or clean the tank with cleaning products or solvents — and Bosch separately sells a descaling solution for a named list of its other iron models. Meanwhile Bosch, Russell Hobbs, Rowenta and Morphy Richards all describe white vinegar on the outside of a cold iron. Inside the tank and outside the soleplate are two different questions, four manufacturers give five answers, and this page prints all of them with names attached instead of picking one.

This is the disagreement the page exists for, and one manufacturer is on both sides of it. AGAINST ANY CHEMICAL IN THE TANK: Philips (philips-iron-water-type, accessed 2026-07-29) says 'Please do not use perfumed water, water from the tumble dryer, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, chemically descaled water or other chemicals as they may cause water spitting, brown staining or damage to your steam iron or garment steamer' — vinegar and descaling agents named together and both prohibited. Bosch's own iron operating instructions (bosch-tda10-iron-instructions, accessed 2026-07-29) state 'DO NOT de-scale or clean the water tank with cleaning products or solvents, as these could cause the iron to drip when using the steam function', and on filling: 'Use only clean water from the tap without mixing anything with it. The addition of other liquids, (unless recommended by Bosch) such as perfume, will damage the appliance. Any damage caused by the use of the aforementioned products will make the guarantee void.' Russell Hobbs (russellhobbs-prevent-limescale-iron, accessed 2026-07-29) says 'Don't use a descaling solution or additives in the water or you'll destroy the anti-scale agent'. FOR A PROPRIETARY DESCALING AGENT: Bosch UK (bosch-iron-descaling-solution, accessed 2026-07-29) sells and recommends its own descaling solution for steam irons and steam stations, 'Removes limescale quickly and effectively and protects your appliance from harmful deposits', for a named model list — 'Suitable only for models: TDA30../TB40.., TDA50.., TDA70../TDA75../TB60.., TDi90../TDi95../TSi80.., TDS11../TS11.., TDS12../TS12.' — at an interval of every 3 months, and adds 'For other models, we recommend using 50% deionised or distilled water to reduce limescale build up'. So Bosch prohibits a chemical descale on the TDA10 and sells one for the TDA30 and above. All the sources agree that a steam iron runs on tap water and disagree on what to do about hard water, giving three different dilutions. Philips (philips-iron-water-type, accessed 2026-07-29): 'Your steam iron or garment steamer has been designed to be used with tap water' and, for hard water, 'it is recommended to use distilled or demineralized water (50% demineralized water mixed with tap water could be used too)'. Bosch's iron operating instructions (bosch-tda10-iron-instructions, accessed 2026-07-29): 'This appliance has been designed to use normal tap water. To prolong the optimum steam function, you may mix tap water with distilled water 1:1. If the tap water in your district is very hard, mix tap water with distilled water 1:2.' Bosch UK (bosch-iron-descaling-solution, accessed 2026-07-29) gives '50% deionised or distilled water' for the models its descaling solution does not cover. Russell Hobbs (russellhobbs-prevent-limescale-iron, accessed 2026-07-29): 'Use distilled water instead of tap water in your iron if you live in a hard water area' — with no mixing at all. The vinegar answer flips depending on whether it is inside the iron or outside it, and the sources have to be read that way or they look like nonsense. OUTSIDE, VINEGAR IS PERMITTED BY SOME MAKERS: Bosch's iron operating instructions (bosch-tda10-iron-instructions, accessed 2026-07-29) give, for a heavily stained soleplate, 'While the iron is cold, iron a linen cloth soaked in white vinegar', then 'dampen a cloth with water and wipe the soleplate clean and dry thoroughly', and separately 'If the steam regulator needle is soiled, remove any deposits from the tip with vinegar and rinse it off with clean water'. Russell Hobbs (russellhobbs-prevent-limescale-iron, accessed 2026-07-29): 'Gently remove any spots from the soleplate, using a little vinegar on a soft, dry cloth so as not to scratch the surface.' Rowenta (rowenta-how-to-clean-an-iron, accessed 2026-07-29): 'Diluted white vinegar can help remove more stubborn marks', with the qualifications 'Avoid direct application on hot surfaces', 'Never scrape the soleplate with metal tools or use harsh chemicals' and 'Don't mix descaling solutions or household acids'. Morphy Richards (morphyrichards-clean-a-steam-iron, accessed 2026-07-29) goes further and names white vinegar for both the vents — 'Mix a small amount of water and white vinegar solution. A small cupful should be more than enough.' — and the soleplate, by soaking a towel in white vinegar. When to use a professional

Stop if the iron leaks water from the body or from the joint of the tank. Bosch says that an iron with a water leak must go to an authorised service centre. This procedure does not repair a leak.

Stop if the iron does not make steam after two self-clean cycles. The cause is then a blocked steam chamber, a spent anti-scale cartridge or a failed pump. This procedure does not reach any of them.

Stop if the cable or the plug has damage. Do not use the iron. Bosch says that only qualified personnel can replace a faulty mains cable.

Do not open the iron. A steam iron has no user-serviceable parts inside it. An incorrect assembly makes an electrical risk that you cannot see.

Common questions

Can I put vinegar in my steam iron to descale it?

Not on the say-so of a web page, and at least three manufacturers tell you not to. Philips lists vinegar by name among the things that must never go in the tank — alongside perfumed water, starch, descaling agents and chemically descaled water — because they may cause water spitting, brown staining or damage to the iron. Russell Hobbs says a descaling solution or additive in the water will destroy the anti-scale agent. Bosch's own iron manual says not to descale or clean the water tank with cleaning products or solvents, because it can make the iron drip when you use steam. Modern irons have an anti-calc cartridge or a resin the acid attacks, which is the mechanism behind all three warnings. The self-clean cycle exists precisely so you do not need a chemical.

So why does everyone say vinegar works on an iron?

Because there is a version that several manufacturers do endorse, and it is on the outside of the iron rather than inside it. Bosch tells you that for a heavily stained soleplate you should iron a linen cloth soaked in white vinegar while the iron is cold, then wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it. Russell Hobbs says to remove spots from the soleplate with a little vinegar on a soft dry cloth, and Rowenta says diluted white vinegar helps with stubborn marks but tells you to avoid applying it to hot surfaces. Morphy Richards names a water and white vinegar solution for clearing blocked vents. Every one of those is external: the advice travels, loses the word 'soleplate' on the way, and turns into 'fill the tank with vinegar', which is the version the manufacturers prohibit.

Is there any descaling product I can use?

Only if your own manufacturer names one, and this is where Bosch contradicts Bosch, which is worth knowing before you buy anything. The Bosch TDA10 manual says do not descale the water tank with cleaning products or solvents. Bosch UK separately sells a descaling solution for steam irons and steam stations, recommends it every three months — and publishes a specific model list it is suitable for, which starts at TDA30 and does not include the TDA10. For models the solution does not cover, Bosch's advice is 50% deionised or distilled water instead. That is not the manufacturer being inconsistent; it is two different machines with two different steam chambers. It is also exactly why this page refuses to name a product for your iron.

How do I run the self-clean cycle?

The shape is the same on most irons and the buttons are not, so use your own manual for the detail. Philips describes it as: fill the tank, heat the iron to maximum with no steam, wait for the light to go out, unplug, hold the iron over the sink with the soleplate horizontal, activate Calc-Clean, and shake gently until it is empty while water, steam and scale come out of the vents. Then heat it again and glide it over a cloth. Bosch's version on the TDA10 involves removing the steam regulator and pouring about 150 ml of water into the hole. Both end the same way and both warn that what comes out is boiling. Do it over a sink, never over your hand.

How often should I descale an iron?

There is no agreed answer, and the spread is a factor of six. Panasonic says internal cleaning approximately once every two weeks, and Bosch says to use Calc'nClean roughly every two weeks if your water is very hard — the same figure with a condition attached. Russell Hobbs says to use the self-clean function every month. Philips says once a month, or every one to two months to prevent brown stains and leaking. Bosch UK's proprietary solution is every three months. Water hardness varies street by street, so treat your own manual as the floor and descale sooner if the iron spits, stains or steams weakly.

What water should I put in a steam iron?

Tap water, unless you live somewhere hard — and then the four sources give four different dilutions. Philips designs for tap water and recommends distilled or demineralized water in hard areas, noting that 50% demineralized mixed with tap will also do. Bosch says normal tap water, 1:1 with distilled to prolong the steam function, and 1:2 with distilled if your district is very hard. Bosch UK says 50% deionised or distilled, and Russell Hobbs says just use distilled. Do not assume neat distilled is always safest: some irons need the mineral content to make steam at all, which is why the ratios exist. Nobody sensible uses water from the tumble dryer, which Philips also has to tell people.

My iron is spitting brown water onto my clothes. Is it ruined?

Usually not — brown water is the classic symptom of scale in the steam chamber, and that is what the self-clean cycle is for. Philips says directly that descaling every one to two months prevents brown stains, brown water and leaking. Run the cycle, clean the soleplate, and try it on an old cloth before it goes near a shirt. If it still spits after two cycles, or if it leaks water from the body rather than the vents, stop using it: Bosch says an iron that leaks water should be checked by an authorised service centre before it is used again.
