When to use a professional
Stop if the mounting plate at your chosen spot already carries a wire. Do not touch or disconnect that wire. Contact a qualified electrician for any alarm that connects to your home's wiring.
Stop if you cannot reach the chosen spot from a stable step stool. Contact your local fire department. Some fire departments install a battery-powered alarm in a home at no cost.
Stop if no spot in a room is within reach of a stable step stool. A stairwell with a high ceiling is a common example. Contact a qualified installer for that spot instead. This page covers only a spot you can reach and mark yourself.
Common questions
How many smoke alarms do I need in my house?
The number depends on your own floor plan, but the U.S. Fire Administration and NFPA's own installation guide agree on the underlying rule: one alarm inside every bedroom, one outside each separate sleeping area, and one on every level of the home, including a basement. A larger home, a long hallway, or an open floor plan can need more than that minimum. There is no single number that fits every house, which is why this page walks you through counting bedrooms, sleeping areas, and levels for your own home rather than printing one figure.
Where should I put a smoke detector?
Put it on the ceiling near the middle of the room first, because smoke and heat rise there fastest. When a ceiling spot is not possible, a high wall spot works, as long as the top of the alarm stays within about a foot of the ceiling. Keep some distance from a bathroom door, a cooking appliance, an air vent, and a ceiling fan, because all four are common causes of a false alarm or a delayed one.
Why does my smoke alarm keep going off near the kitchen?
It is very likely sitting closer to the stove or the oven than installation guidance recommends. NFPA's own installation guide gives at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance as the recommended distance for a standard alarm. If moving it that far is not possible in a small kitchen, the battery-replacement page on this site covers a hush-button alarm as an alternative, which is a feature choice rather than a placement choice.
Is a detector too close to the bathroom a problem?
Yes, if it sits close enough for shower steam to reach it. NFPA's own installation guide recommends at least 3 feet from a bathroom door for this reason. Steam can trigger a false alarm in much the same way smoke does, because both scatter the light inside the sensor.
Does a hallway need its own smoke alarm?
Usually yes, because the placement rule calls for an alarm outside each separate sleeping area, and a hallway outside a row of bedrooms is exactly that spot. One hallway alarm can often cover several nearby bedrooms at once. A long hallway or a large home can still need an additional alarm to keep every sleeping area within reach of a fast warning.
Do all my smoke alarms need to sound together?
It is not a strict requirement for every home, but both the U.S. Fire Administration and NFPA describe interconnected alarms, where one sounding alarm sets off every other alarm in the home, as the best protection. A sleeping person on a different level or behind a closed door benefits the most from this feature. Battery-powered alarms with a wireless link can add this feature without new household wiring.
