Summary
A chirp and an alarm are not the same thing, and mixing them up is how people either evacuate over a dead battery or, worse, ignore a real fire. A chirp is a short, repeating sound the device uses to ask for something: a battery, a clean sensor, or, eventually, a whole new unit. A full alarm is loud and continuous, and CPSC's guidance for that sound is simple: leave the home immediately and do not stop to investigate. This page is for the chirp. It walks through finding which alarm in the home is making the sound, reading its model number and its age, and getting from there to the actual cause.
What this page will not do is hand you a table that says ‘three chirps means low battery, four means replace the unit.’ That table exists, but a different one exists for nearly every manufacturer and often for every model line from the same manufacturer — Kidde's own support pages do not even give the same number of seconds between chirps for the same condition on two different pages of their own website. Printing one number here would make it wrong for most readers and dangerously confident for all of them. So this page teaches the method: find the unit, read its label, and look up the pattern for that exact model in the documentation for that model. It also covers the one signal worth knowing without a lookup — the end-of-life chirp on a carbon monoxide alarm, which Kidde states plainly will not respond to carbon monoxide while it is sounding.

When to use a professional
Stop if the alarm gives a loud, continuous sound. Leave the home immediately. Telephone the fire department from outside. Do not search for the cause of a full alarm.
Stop if the alarm has wires. Do not remove the mounting plate. Do not disconnect the wires. A qualified electrician must do all work behind the mounting plate.
Use the separate procedure for a carbon monoxide alarm. An old sensor can fail to sense carbon monoxide. Stop if you cannot find the chirp pattern for your alarm model. Contact the manufacturer of the alarm. Ask for the pattern table for your model number.
Stop if the chirp continues after you replace the battery. Stop if the chirp continues after you reset the alarm. Replace the entire alarm. Speak to your local fire department if you are not sure the new alarm works. Some fire departments will install alarms at no cost.
Common questions
Why does my smoke detector keep beeping?
Almost always because the alarm is asking for something, not because it detected smoke. CPSC says plainly that when a smoke alarm begins to chirp, signaling low battery power, you should replace the batteries immediately. Kidde's own troubleshooting pages add other causes behind that single word ‘chirp’: the hush feature running its course, dust in the sensor, a stored fault a battery change did not clear, or the alarm reaching the end of its working life. The chirp interval Kidde publishes for a low battery is not even consistent across its own pages, so this site will not print one universal number and call it the answer. Find your model number on the back of the unit and read the pattern given for that exact model.
How do I find which smoke alarm is beeping when I have several in my house?
Walk from room to room and listen near each alarm; in most homes only the unit with the problem gives the chirp. Stand directly under the one that sounds loudest to confirm it. Kidde notes one exception worth knowing: a loose connection on the interconnecting wire can make a chirp sound like it is coming from a neighboring alarm rather than the true source. If two alarms seem equally loud, check the date of manufacture and the battery on both before you decide. This is different from a real fire alarm, where an interconnected system is designed to sound every unit in the house at once.
What does 3 chirps mean on a smoke detector?
This page will not answer that with one number, and here is why: the count and the spacing of a chirp is set by the manufacturer and can differ between models from the very same company. Kidde alone uses different chirp intervals for a low battery, a hush condition, an end-of-life warning, and a malfunction, and two of Kidde's own pages do not even agree on the exact seconds for a low-battery chirp. A number that is right for one alarm can be wrong, and dangerously reassuring, for another. Find the model number on the back of your alarm and look up the pattern table for that exact model in the manufacturer's documentation.
Why does my smoke alarm chirp in the middle of the night?
Cold air is usually why. Kidde explains that a battery nearing the end of its charge produces more internal resistance as the room cools, and most homes are coolest between about 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., which is exactly when the low-battery chirp tends to start. It often stops again once the house warms up a few degrees, which is why it can feel like the alarm fixed itself. Replacing the battery, and checking whether the whole alarm has passed its 10-year replacement age, is the real fix rather than waiting for warmer air.
I replaced the battery and it is still chirping. What now?
First check the date of manufacture on the back label: if the alarm is 10 years old or older, USFA's guidance is to replace the whole unit, and a new battery cannot extend that. If the alarm is still within its working life, Kidde notes that the alarm's own processor can hold onto a fault, such as a weak-battery reading, even after a fresh battery goes in, so a full reset following your model's documentation is the next step before you assume the unit is broken. A chirp that survives both a new battery and a reset points to the alarm itself, not the battery, so replace the entire unit.
Is a chirp the same as my carbon monoxide alarm going off?
No, and mixing the two up matters. A chirp is a maintenance signal; a loud, continuous sound is the actual alarm, and CPSC's guidance for a real alarm signal is to leave the home immediately, not to investigate. For a carbon monoxide alarm specifically, Kidde warns that once its end-of-life chirp starts, “the alarm will not respond to carbon monoxide in this condition,” so a chirping CO alarm should never be left chirping on the assumption it is still protecting you.
