Check the Battery Cycle Count and Condition on a MacBook

Two numbers that answer two different questions — and the limit you are measuring against is published per model by Apple and nowhere else

Summary

There are two things macOS will tell you about your MacBook's battery, and almost everyone merges them into one. They are not the same thing.

The cycle count is a tally. It counts how many times you have used a full battery's worth of charge — not how many times you have plugged in. Half a charge today and half tomorrow is one cycle, not two. It only ever goes up, and it tells you how much the battery has been used.

The condition — Battery Health, showing Normal or Service Recommended — is a judgement macOS makes right now about how well the battery still holds a charge. It can change, and it is not a simple function of the cycle count.

So a MacBook can have a high cycle count and read Normal, or a low cycle count and read Service Recommended, and neither is a contradiction. You need both numbers, and this page has you write both down.

The part no general answer can give you is the limit. Apple publishes a maximum cycle count for every laptop it has made, it differs by model, and Apple is the only place it exists. This page will not guess it. It shows you how to read your own count, then sends you to Apple's own table to look up the number for your exact model — because the difference between a 300-cycle machine and a 1000-cycle machine is the difference between a battery that is finished and one that is barely started.

When to use a professional

Stop before any battery replacement. Apple states that a trained technician must service a built-in battery. Damage to a battery can cause excess heat, a fire or an injury. Speak to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Stop if your Mac shows damage. Apple states that a damaged Mac can cause an injury. Do not use it. Speak to Apple Support.

Stop if your Mac shows Service Recommended and the battery life is too short. Apple states that you can continue to use the Mac. The decision about a replacement is yours. Speak to Apple about the cost first.

Stop if the battery does not charge. This page reads two values. It does not correct a charge fault. Apple gives a separate article for that fault.

Stop if your model name is not in the Apple table. Do not use a maximum from a similar model. Speak to Apple Support for the correct value.

This page does not give the steps for three operations. These are a battery replacement, a change to the battery health settings, and a correction of a charge fault.

Common questions

How many cycles is a MacBook battery good for?

There is no single answer, and that is the honest one. Apple publishes a maximum cycle count per model and it is not the same number across the range — older machines are rated far lower than recent ones, and Apple's table groups models explicitly because of that. This page deliberately does not reproduce the figure for any model, because the table changes with every hardware release and a stale copy of it would send you to the wrong number for your machine. Look yours up in Apple's own table, which is linked in the sources, using the exact model name including size and year.

What counts as one cycle?

Using up a full battery's worth of charge, however long that takes. Apple's own example: use half your charge one day and recharge fully, then do the same the next day, and that is one cycle, not two. So plugging in does not add a cycle, and a day of heavy use might add more than one. It is a measure of energy through the battery, not of how often you reach for the charger — which is why the number is usually lower than people expect.

My cycle count is past the maximum. Is the battery dead?

No. Apple's wording is that the battery is 'considered consumed' once it reaches the limit, and that you can carry on using it — you may just notice shorter battery life. Apple's design target is that a battery still holds up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count, so hitting the limit is the point where Apple recommends replacement for best performance, not the point where the battery stops working. Plenty of machines run for years past it.

What's the difference between the cycle count and Battery Health?

They answer different questions and this is the single most common confusion about MacBook batteries. The cycle count is cumulative history: how much the battery has been used, ever. It only goes up. Battery Health is a present-tense judgement macOS makes about whether the battery still holds charge properly, and it shows either Normal or Service Recommended. A machine can be well past its cycle limit and still read Normal, or be nowhere near it and read Service Recommended. Write both down; neither on its own tells you what to do.

It says Service Recommended. Do I have to do something right now?

No. Apple is explicit that you can safely continue using the Mac, and that you can get it serviced if the reduced charging capacity is actually affecting you. That is a genuine judgement call and it is yours to make: if the machine still lasts long enough for how you use it, there is no urgency. Note also that macOS may show it because battery health management has deliberately limited the maximum charge, which is a feature working as designed rather than a failure. If the battery life has genuinely become a problem, ask Apple what a replacement costs before deciding.

Apple's two pages word 'Service Recommended' slightly differently. Which is right?

Both, and they are not in conflict. The support article says it means the battery's ability to hold charge is less than when new, or that it is not functioning normally. The Mac User Guide leads with the reassuring half — the battery is performing normally, but holds less charge than when new — and then adds a note that it may also not be functioning normally, in which case you should contact Apple. Read together they say the same thing: it usually means reduced capacity, occasionally means something else, and Apple is the one who can tell which.

Can I use one of those battery health apps instead?

Apple advises against relying on them, and says so directly: third-party apps that report battery-health conditions might not be accurate or conclusively indicate reduced runtime, and it is best to rely on what macOS reports. That is not Apple being territorial — the useful figures here are the cycle count in System Information and the Battery Health value in Settings, both of which come straight from the system. This page names no third-party tool for that reason.

Why won't my MacBook charge past 80%?

That is almost certainly battery health management doing its job, not a fault. Apple describes the feature as monitoring the battery's temperature history and charging patterns, and temporarily reducing the maximum charge to slow the battery's chemical ageing. Apple documents it in two separate articles depending on whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor, and on Intel machines there is a 'Manage battery longevity' switch you can turn off — with Apple's own caveat that doing so might shorten the battery's lifespan. This page names that switch and deliberately does not tell you to change it.

Can I replace the battery myself?

Not on a modern MacBook, and this is the one place on this page where the answer is a safety answer rather than a preference. Apple states that the built-in battery should only be serviced by a trained technician or by following Apple's own repair manual, to avoid battery damage that could cause overheating, fire or injury. Apple's route is an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider using genuine parts; Self Service Repair exists for some models in some countries. Some much older Mac laptops had removable batteries — if yours does, Apple still says to contact a service provider for help.
