Summary

A laptop that runs hot and has a loud fan is usually one of three different problems wearing the same disguise. Fan noise that stays loud even with nothing running points to a blocked air vent or a background process. Fan noise that only appears during a demanding task, like a video call or a game, is the fan doing its job. Fan noise together with a sudden shutdown while the machine feels hot is a different, more serious fault, and this page routes you straight to the manufacturer for that one.

This page does not open the case, and it does not touch the fan, the heat sink or the thermal paste inside a laptop — that work needs a trained technician and can void a warranty. Dell and Apple give different guidance on compressed air, and this page does not reconcile them. Dell's 'How to Troubleshoot Fan Issues' (dell-troubleshoot-fan-issues) answers its own FAQ: "Can I use a vacuum cleaner to clean my Dell's vents? A: No — vacuum cleaners can generate static electricity, which might damage internal components. Use compressed air instead." Apple's 'How to clean your Apple products' (apple-clean-your-products-103258) names compressed air for exactly one accessory, the Magic Mouse sensor ("If you see debris, use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window"), and forbids it outright for an iPad or an iPod ("Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide to clean iPad"). Apple's own MacBook cleaning instructions do not name compressed air either way; they prohibit only "aerosol sprays, solvents, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide that might damage the finish." Both pages were read in full on 2026-08-04. Because the manufacturers disagree on a method that touches the inside of the vent path, this page sends the reader to their own manufacturer's instructions rather than naming one method as safe for every laptop.

Common questions

Why is my laptop fan so loud all the time?

Constant fan noise, even when you are not doing anything demanding, usually points away from a normal workload and toward a blocked air vent, a stuck background process, or dust built up around the cooling fins. Dell's own troubleshooting guide says a fan that runs constantly can usually be traced to a heavy workload driving up processor use, so the first job is finding out what is actually using the processor, not assuming the fan itself is broken. This page's load-finding section walks you through Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on a Mac to identify that process before you do anything else.

Is it normal for a laptop to get hot?

Yes, within limits. Apple's own support article says the fans on your device run faster when the processor is working on intensive tasks, and that the room's ambient temperature also affects how soon and how hard the fans respond. Dell adds that thin, light laptop designs concentrate heat by nature, most noticeably on the base near the vents and along the top of the keyboard. What is not normal is heat combined with a sudden, unexpected shutdown — that combination is covered in this page's stop point, not in the normal-heat explanation.

Can I use compressed air to clean my laptop's vents?

It depends on your manufacturer, and the two biggest ones disagree. Dell's own troubleshooting guide recommends compressed air over a vacuum cleaner, and specifically warns that a vacuum can build static electricity and damage internal parts. Apple's cleaning instructions name compressed air for only one accessory, the Magic Mouse sensor, forbid it outright for an iPad or an iPod, and simply do not mention it either way for a MacBook. Because the manufacturers do not agree, this page does not pick a side — check the cleaning instructions for your own laptop's make and model before you use anything on the vents.

My MacBook is hot and slow — how do I find what's using the CPU?

Open Activity Monitor, which is Apple's own built-in tool for exactly this question. Apple's guide says you can sort the process list by clicking any column heading, so a click on the CPU heading brings the heaviest process to the top or the bottom of the list, depending on which way it is sorted. Whatever sits at the top after that click is the process worth investigating or closing first. If closing it does not bring the fan and the heat back down, the fault is more likely airflow than any single app.

Why does my laptop get hotter on my lap than on a desk?

Because a lap, a couch cushion or a bed is a soft surface, and a soft surface behaves differently from a hard desk for a laptop's airflow. Apple's own guidance says to use a hard, flat surface for the best temperature control, and specifically notes that a soft surface makes the fans run more. Dell goes further and calls this out as a caution: fabric from a mattress or a similar surface can block the vents and bring on overheating within a short time. When should I stop and get the laptop looked at professionally?

Stop immediately if the computer has turned off without warning while it felt hot — Dell's guidance is to shut it down until it cools. Contacting the manufacturer before you use it again is our advice rather than Dell's — Dell tells you to contact them for a casing that is too hot to touch or shows heat damage, which is a different trigger. Stop before you open the case for any reason; this page's steps stay outside the case on purpose, because the fan, the heat sink and the thermal paste are technician work, and opening the case can void a warranty. Stop as well if the fan is still loud and the case is still hot after you have cleared the vents, checked the load, and adjusted the power settings — at that point a hardware fault is more likely than anything this page can fix.
