Summary
A wet/dry vacuum, also called a shop vac, needs a different filter for a different job, and fitting the wrong one is the most common mistake owners make. Run water through the ordinary dry cartridge filter and it soaks through, clogs, and can let liquid reach the motor. Run fine dust, such as drywall dust or cold ashes, through it and the dust can pass straight through and blow back into the room. When to use a professional
Stop the vacuum if you notice a loss of suction. Also stop if liquid or dust comes from the exhaust, or the motor sounds wrong. Disconnect the vacuum from the electrical supply. Contact the manufacturer or an approved service center before you use the vacuum again.
Do not use the vacuum if the cord, the plug, or the filter has damage. Contact the manufacturer for a replacement part. Contact the manufacturer if you are not sure which filter your model needs.
Common questions
Can I vacuum water with my shop vac?
Yes, if you fit the right filter first. RIDGID and Shop-Vac both say a foam sleeve filter is the one to use for wet pickup, not the ordinary dry cartridge filter. A dry filter left in for a large amount of water becomes soaked, and the manufacturers say liquid can then reach the motor. Both manufacturers say a clean dry filter can stay in for a small spill, but neither publishes an exact quantity for what counts as small — fit the foam sleeve if you are at all unsure.
Which filter should I use for wet pickup in a wet/dry vac?
A foam sleeve filter, sometimes called a wet application filter. Shop-Vac calls it the best filter for wet pickup, and RIDGID sells a full-height version for vacuums of 5 gallons and larger and a half-height version for 3 to 4.5 gallon models. Check your own model's documentation for the exact part.
Why does my shop vac blow dust back into the room?
Almost always because the filter is too coarse for the dust. Shop-Vac's own guidance sorts dry debris into large, medium and fine categories, each needing a finer filter than the last, and puts fine debris such as drywall dust or cold ashes in the finest category. RIDGID says the same about its standard filter: fine dust can pass through it and come back out through the exhaust. Fit a fine-dust or HEPA filter, and a dust collection bag if your model uses one.
Can I vacuum fireplace ash with a shop vac?
Only cold ash, and only with a fine-dust filter — both RIDGID and Shop-Vac list cold ashes among the fine debris that needs one. Neither manufacturer allows hot ash, coals, or anything still burning or smoking in any of their wet/dry vacuums, and RIDGID's own warning label says sparks inside the motor can start a fire. If you clean ash often, a vacuum built specifically for ash is the safer tool.
What happens if I vacuum water with the dry filter still fitted?
For a small spill, both manufacturers say a clean dry filter can stay in place. For a larger amount, RIDGID says the filter becomes saturated and the vacuum can mist water out of the exhaust, and warns that liquid reaching the motor can cause damage or an electric shock. Remove the dry filter and fit the foam sleeve before you pick up any real quantity of water.
How do I know when the tank is full while I vacuum water?
The vacuum tells you. RIDGID's manuals describe a float that rises and shuts off the airflow automatically once the liquid reaches a set level inside the tank — you will notice the suction stop and the motor pitch change. Turn the machine off, unplug it, and empty the tank before you continue. RIDGID also warns against running the motor with the float raised, since this can damage it.
