Summary

A disposable dust mask, often sold as an N95, is the everyday answer to sanding, sawing, cutting and grinding dust from a power tool. Not every dust mask on a shelf is actually NIOSH-approved, and a growing number of counterfeit N95 masks carry a printed approval number that does not exist on the government's own list. Is a dust mask enough? For ordinary wood, drywall and household dust, a genuine N95 usually is. For concrete, brick or stone dust, the hazard often includes silica, and heavy or long exposure can call for more than a simple disposable respirator and a professional judgment call. When to use a professional

This page is for personal use away from a work site. Follow the respiratory protection program of your employer if your work needs one. That program can need a medical evaluation and a fit test.

Stop work and call a certified professional if you are not sure about the material. A disposable respirator does not replace a professional material test.

Talk to a doctor before you use a respirator if you have a lung or a heart condition. Stop work if you feel dizzy or short of breath. Call a doctor right away.

Ask an industrial hygienist about a task with heavy or long dust exposure. A written program under federal rules can apply at a job site. This page does not replace a fit test service.

Common questions

Is a dust mask enough for sanding wood?

For ordinary wood, drywall and general household dust, a genuine N95 filtering facepiece respirator is usually enough. OSHA describes this class of particulate respirator as protection against particles only, not against chemicals, gases or vapors. If the wood is treated, painted or an engineered board, read the product label first, because some of these products release more than dust. A properly fitted N95 with no facial hair crossing the seal is the baseline; a dustier or longer job can call for the N99 or N100 class instead.

What is the difference between a dust mask and an N95 respirator?

In everyday speech, 'dust mask' covers everything from a loose comfort mask sold at a hardware store to a genuine NIOSH-approved N95. Only a respirator on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List with the required label, including a TC approval number, is actually an N95 in the regulatory sense. A soft comfort mask with no approval number may be more comfortable, but it has not been tested to the same standard and should not be assumed to filter 95% of particles.

How can I tell if my N95 is fake?

Start with the label. A genuine NIOSH-approved respirator shows the maker's name, a model or part number, the filter class (such as N95), a TC approval number in the form TC-84A-XXXX, the word NIOSH in capital letters with the correct spelling, and a lot number. NIOSH's own guidance lists missing markings, misspelled NIOSH branding, decorative add-ons such as sequins, ear loops with no connecting fastener, and any claim of approval for children as signs of a counterfeit or misrepresented respirator. The surest check is to search the printed TC number on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List yourself.

What respirator should I use for concrete or masonry dust?

Concrete, brick, stone and tile dust can contain crystalline silica, a hazard that OSHA and NIOSH both take seriously. A higher filter class, such as N100 or P100, gives more filtration than a basic N95. For a one-off small job, a well-fitted higher-class disposable respirator is a reasonable choice, but heavy or repeated silica-generating work, especially at a job site with an employer, can fall under OSHA's silica construction standard and its own respiratory protection requirements. When in doubt, ask an industrial hygienist rather than guess.

Can I reuse a disposable respirator?

Yes, within limits. OSHA's guidance says a filtering facepiece respirator must be replaced when it becomes discolored, damaged or clogged, and NIOSH adds that you can wear one until it is damaged, soiled or noticeably harder to breathe through. Some manufacturers give their own service life or a maximum number of uses on the package or the instructions, so check those first. Store a respirator you plan to reuse in a clean bag, and never share it with someone else.

Do I need a fit test to wear a dust mask at home?

Not for personal, voluntary use away from a job. OSHA has confirmed that voluntary use of a filtering facepiece respirator under 29 CFR 1910.134 does not require a medical evaluation or a fit test, though it is still worth reading the package instructions and doing your own seal check before you start a tool. If your work is for an employer that requires respirator use, that is a different situation, and their written respiratory protection program applies instead, including a medical evaluation and a fit test.

Will an N95 protect me from paint fumes or spray paint?

No. A filtering facepiece respirator, including every class from N95 through P100, filters particles and does nothing for a gas or a vapor. NIOSH is explicit that these respirators do not provide protection against gases or vapors. Spray paint, solvent fumes and similar chemical vapors need a different kind of respirator, most often one with a cartridge rated for organic vapor, which is outside what this page covers.

What is the difference between N95, N99, N100, R95 and P100?

The number is the minimum percentage of particles the filter stops at the hardest-to-catch particle size: 95, 99 or 99.97 (shown as 100). The letter shows how the filter handles an oil-based particle: N means no resistance to oil, R means some resistance for a limited time, and P means strong, lasting resistance. For ordinary power tool dust with no oil mist involved, the letter usually does not matter and N-class respirators are the common choice; a P-class becomes relevant around an oil aerosol, such as some metalworking tasks.
