Summary
Summer washer fluid is mostly water, and water freezes. When it freezes inside the reservoir, the pump or the lines, a two-dollar bottle of the wrong fluid can turn into a cracked reservoir or a dead pump right when you need clear glass the most. The fix costs almost nothing: check the freeze-point rating printed on the bottle before you buy, and choose one rated at or below the coldest temperature you expect.

When to use a professional
Stop the work if fluid leaks from under the vehicle after you add washer fluid. Stop the work if the washer motor runs but no fluid reaches the nozzles. Speak to a repair shop about a cracked reservoir, a failed pump, or a blocked line.

Common questions
What temperature rating do I need for winter washer fluid?
There is no single number that fits every car or every climate, because different products carry different ratings. Prestone's own safety data sheet for its All Season 3-1 formula gives a melting and freezing point of less than -28°F (less than -33.3°C). Note the “less than”: the sheet publishes a bound, not a measured freezing point, so the fluid is stated to stay liquid at least that far down rather than to freeze exactly there. Other products carry their own ratings, and this page does not print a figure for any of them, because no source it cites publishes one — the only way to know your bottle's rating is to read the label. Toyota's own guidance draws a similar line: a general-purpose, year-round fluid works in both cold and warm climates, while a dedicated winter formula uses agents that prevent freezing and help melt ice. Buy a fluid rated at or below the coldest temperature you expect before your next refill, not the average.
Can I use plain water in my windshield washer reservoir?
In mild weather, yes — Mazda's own owner's manual says to use plain water if washer fluid is not available. But Mazda is just as direct about winter: use only washer fluid in cold weather, to keep it from freezing. Frozen fluid in the reservoir, the pump or the lines does not just fail to clean the glass; it can damage the reservoir and the pump, turning a two-dollar top-up into a repair bill.
Can I put engine coolant or antifreeze in the washer reservoir instead?
No. Mazda's owner's manual calls this dangerous: antifreeze sprayed on the windscreen dirties the glass, cuts your visibility, and could result in an accident. Honda's manual adds a second reason — antifreeze can damage your vehicle's paint. The two fluids are made, tested and approved for different systems, and neither manufacturer treats them as interchangeable.
Is windshield washer fluid actually poisonous?
Yes. Most ready-to-use washer fluid, including Prestone's All Season 3-1 formula, contains methyl alcohol (methanol) as its main active ingredient — the maker's own safety data sheet classifies the product DANGER, 'toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin and if inhaled,' and warns it 'may be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed.' Keep it in its original, labeled container, store it out of the reach of children and pets, and if anyone swallows it, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 or get emergency care right away.
How often do I need to change my windshield washer fluid?
You don't, in the sense of draining and replacing it on a schedule — Toyota's own guidance is direct: washer fluid 'doesn't need to be changed, only refilled.' Check the level whenever you check other fluids, and top it off with a fluid rated for the season. The main reason to deliberately run the reservoir low before a seasonal refill is to switch formulas, such as using up a summer blend before adding a winter-rated fluid ahead of freezing weather.
What if my washer fluid still freezes even though I bought a winter formula?
Either the rating was not low enough for how cold it actually got where you park, or older, lower-rated fluid already in the reservoir diluted the fluid you added. Let the vehicle sit in a garage or in the sun until the fluid in the reservoir and the lines has thawed, then compare the rating on the bottle to the coldest temperature in the forecast. This page does not cover a cracked reservoir or a damaged pump; if fluid leaks from under the hood after a freeze, that is a repair job, not a top-up.

And 'other product lines are rated closer to 0°F' cited nothing: none of this record's four sources publishes a 0°F rating, so the figure is removed rather than re-sourced. The page still sends the reader to the label, which is where their own bottle's rating actually is.
