How do I check my automatic transmission fluid?
It depends entirely on your vehicle, and the first real step is finding out which situation you're in. If a dipstick exists, your own documentation gives the exact conditions — Toyota's general guidance is to park level, start the engine, then pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully, and pull it out again to read the level. Some manufacturers add stricter conditions on top of that, such as a specific gear position or a fluid temperature reached only after several minutes of driving. If no check exists in your documentation, the transmission is sealed, and reading a level yourself is not the answer — a technician's check is.
My car doesn't have a transmission fluid dipstick. Is that normal?
Yes, on a large share of current vehicles. Toyota's own guidance states that most newer model vehicles have sealed transmission systems which may not have a dipstick, and that the vehicle's internal mechanisms automatically check and adjust the fluid level instead. A sealed transmission is designed to be maintenance-free under normal use. If you suspect a problem with one — a change in how the vehicle shifts, a noise, a leak — the guidance is to consult an auto technician rather than open the transmission yourself.
Should the engine be running when I check the transmission fluid?
Often yes, and that is the opposite of how you check engine oil, which is why it's worth stating plainly. Toyota's general procedure starts the engine before the dipstick is pulled. Kia's own owner's manual, for its own vehicles, goes further: it calls for the engine running at idle speed, the gear selector in Neutral, and the fluid warmed to a stated temperature range — reached, on a cold vehicle, by about ten minutes of ordinary driving — before the reading means anything. Follow the condition your own documentation gives rather than assuming either pattern applies to your car.
What color should transmission fluid be? I found red fluid on my driveway.
New automatic transmission fluid is red or pink-red — Kia's manual explains that a red dye is added specifically so the fluid can be told apart from engine oil or antifreeze, and that the dye is not permanent and fades as the vehicle covers distance, eventually looking light brown. That fading alone is not a quality problem. Toyota adds the warning sign worth watching for instead: fluid that looks significantly darker and smells of burning, which can indicate contamination or degradation and is worth a technician's look. A puddle under the vehicle is a leak regardless of the exact shade — other fluids are dyed red too, so don't diagnose it by colour alone, and don't keep driving on the assumption it will stay topped up.
Can I just add fluid if the level looks low?
Only the fluid your own vehicle documentation specifies, and only up to the mark the documentation gives for the condition you checked in. Kia's manual warns that a non-specified fluid can cause transmission malfunction and failure, and that overfilling can cause foaming and the same kind of damage from the other direction. Add it in small amounts and recheck the level after each one rather than guessing a quantity.
Why won't this page give me the exact procedure for my car?
Because the honest answer changes with the vehicle in front of you, in every dimension that matters: whether a dipstick exists at all, whether the engine runs during the check, which gear the selector sits in, and what temperature the fluid needs to reach. Kia's own manual and Toyota's own general guidance don't even agree on how much detail there is to give, and neither would apply correctly to a vehicle from a different maker.
