Summary

A tape measure looks simple, but two things trip up almost everyone: the small marks between the inch numbers, and the metal hook at the end that wobbles. That wobble is not a broken tool. The hook is riveted with a small amount of built-in play, moved back and forward by a distance equal to the hook's own thickness, so a reading comes out the same whether you hook it over an outside edge or push it flat against an inside wall.

When to use a professional

Replace the tape measure if the hook has a bend or a crack, or if it does not move. Do not use a damaged tape for a measurement that must be exact. For trade or legal measurements, use a tape marked for that purpose.

Common questions

Is my tape measure broken if the hook wiggles?

No. The hook is riveted loosely on purpose, and a small amount of side-to-side and back-and-forth play is normal. The play equals the hook's own thickness, and a US patent assigned to The Stanley Works describes this as a "true zero" design that keeps both outside and inside measurements accurate. A hook that is bent, or so loose it comes off the rivets, is worn and should be checked against a known length or replaced.

How do I read the small marks between the inch numbers?

The tallest marks are whole inches, usually printed with a number. Between them, smaller marks divide the inch into equal binary parts: halves, then quarters, then eighths, and often sixteenths. Count the marks from the last whole inch to find the fraction: two marks past the 4-inch mark, for example, is 4 and 1/8 inches on a blade that divides down to eighths.

Why does a tape measure give a different reading for inside and outside measurements?

The hook is designed to move. Hooked over an outside edge, it slides outward and leaves a gap equal to its own thickness, so that gap is not counted twice. Pushed flat against an inside wall, it folds back and adds that same thickness to the count. Either way, the reading comes out true to the object, not to the hook.

What if the hook is bent or missing, or my measurement doesn't start at an edge the hook can reach?

Do not trust the end of the tape. Instead, start the reading from any clear whole-inch mark, extend to the point you want, and subtract the number you started from. This works because the hook is not part of the reading at all, so its thickness never enters the count. Carpenters sometimes call this "burning an inch," starting from the 1-inch or 10-inch mark out of habit.

How accurate is a tape measure supposed to be?

For a typical 25-foot steel tape, the tolerance recognized for a tape sold or used for trade is 1/16 of an inch over its full length, under NIST Handbook 44. A longer or shorter tape is held to a different tolerance band. This page does not test your own tape against that figure; a separate page covers checking a tape measure against a known length.

Why are the lines on my tape measure so thin?

US legal-metrology rules cap the width of every graduation line at 0.03 inch (0.75 mm), and require the smallest line on the blade to be no wider than half the distance it marks. A thicker line would cover part of the measurement it is meant to show.
