Inspecting a Grinding or Cutting Wheel Before You Fit It

Summary

A grinding wheel or a cutting disc — the flat, round abrasive stone that fits on an angle grinder or a bench grinder — carries two numbers that matter more than its size: a maximum operating speed printed on its label, and sometimes a date code. Before you fit a new wheel, that speed has to be checked against the tool's own maximum speed, printed on the tool's nameplate, and the wheel has to be inspected and tested for a hidden crack. Skipping either check is how a wheel that looks fine ends up failing while it is spinning at full speed.

This page walks through reading both sets of markings, running the tap ("ring") test that catches a crack a visual check can miss, fitting the flanges the wheel was designed for, and running a short test with no load before you put the tool to work. It does not print a table of safe speeds by wheel size — that table belongs to a standard (ANSI B7.1 and its equivalents) that is not public domain, and the maker of your own wheel has already put the number you need on the wheel itself. When to use a professional

Stop if you cannot find the maximum speed on the tool or on the wheel. Consult the manufacturer of the tool or the wheel. Do not guess either number.

Stop if the wheel fails the ring test or shows a crack, a chip, or a broken edge. Do not repair a damaged wheel. Discard the wheel.

Do not make the arbor hole of a wheel larger to fit a spindle. Do not use a washer or a shim to fill a hole that is too large. Buy a wheel with the correct arbor hole.

Stop if the guard shows damage or is absent, and you cannot fit a correct guard. Do not run the tool without a guard. Speak to a service centre.

Stop the tool at once if you hear a new noise or feel a new vibration during the test run. Do not use the wheel. Speak to a service centre or to the wheel manufacturer.

Common questions

What's the difference between a grinding wheel and a flap disc?

A grinding wheel or a cutting disc is a bonded abrasive: grit is held together in a solid wheel by a resin, rubber or ceramic bond. A flap disc is made of small flaps of coated abrasive cloth attached to a backing plate, closer to a stack of sandpaper than a solid stone. This page covers bonded wheels: solid grinding wheels and cutting-off (cut-off) wheels. It does not cover flap discs, sanding discs, wire wheels or diamond blades, which carry their own rules.

How do I find the maximum speed of my grinder?

It's printed on the tool's nameplate, usually a label on the body of the tool, and repeated in the specifications section of the manual as the no-load RPM. Don't take it from the box the tool came in or from the model name — read it from the tool itself. DeWALT's own manual gives this as a fixed number for each grinder model it covers, for example 6,500 RPM for one model and 8,500 RPM for another, in the very same instruction manual. Write the number on a label inside the tool's case so you don't have to search for it again.

What is a ring test, and does it actually work?

It's a quick check for a hidden crack: tap the wheel gently near its edge with a light, non-metal handle and listen. OSHA's own description of the test, in the federal regulation for abrasive wheel machinery, says a sound wheel gives a clear metallic tone and a cracked wheel gives a dead, dull sound instead. The test only works on a dry wheel — moisture deadens the sound the same way a crack does, so a wet wheel can give a false pass.

Do grinding wheels really expire?

Some do. The Unified Abrasives Manufacturers' Association, a trade group for the abrasives industry, states that some organic-bonded wheels have a limited shelf life, while a vitrified (ceramic-bonded) wheel stored well has an almost unlimited one. This page does not print a specific number of years, because the figure depends on the bond type and only one trade source was available to check it against. If your wheel carries a date code, treat it as an expiry.

Can I use a wheel with an arbor hole that's slightly too big, with a washer to take up the gap?

No. DeWALT's instruction is that the arbor size of a wheel must properly fit the spindle of the tool, and that a hole that doesn't match the tool's mounting hardware will run out of balance and can cause a loss of control. A washer or a shim used to fill an oversized hole is not a part the tool or the wheel was designed around. Buy a wheel with the correct arbor hole instead.

Why does the guard matter if I'm careful with the tool?

The guard is there for the moment you can't be careful enough: the instant a wheel fails. Federal guarding rules for a portable grinder limit how much of the wheel a guard may leave exposed toward the operator, and DeWALT's manual is direct about why — the guard helps protect the operator from broken wheel fragments and from sparks that could ignite clothing. A wheel spins at thousands of revolutions per minute, and a fragment leaving it carries that speed with it.

What torque should the clamp nut be?

The manual read for this page prints no torque figure for the clamp nut — DeWALT's instruction is simply to tighten it with the wrench supplied for the tool while the spindle lock is held. If you want a number, it has to come from your own tool's documentation or from the manufacturer directly. A torque figure guessed for somebody else's fastener is exactly the kind of number this site won't print.

My grinder has a dial or a variable speed trigger. Can I just run a fast wheel slower?

No — the comparison is against the tool's maximum marked speed, not the speed you intend to use. A variable-speed dial does not change the maximum speed printed on the tool's own nameplate, which is the number the wheel's rating has to beat. Fit the wheel as if the tool will run at its maximum speed.
