BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin. This procedure is general reference information, not professional advice. Equipment varies by manufacturer, model, and year. Always follow the documentation supplied with your equipment — where it differs from this page, follow the manufacturer. Verify that you have the tools, the working conditions, and the ability to do this task safely. If anything is unclear, if the equipment is damaged, or if the task exceeds your experience, stop and use a qualified professional. You are responsible for your own safety and for the outcome. This site accepts no liability for any loss, damage, or injury arising from the use of this information.

Specifications marked unverified could not be traced to a manufacturer source. Do not rely on them — obtain the value from your equipment documentation.

Summary

This page shows you how to clean the inside of an oven by hand, without running a self-cleaning cycle. It works through the mild methods GE Appliances and Whirlpool publish for their own self-cleaning ovens: dish soap and water, a non-abrasive pad, a proprietary non-abrasive cleaner, and an overnight ammonia method for stubborn baked-on grease. It also covers the question a bottle of oven cleaner on the shopping list raises: is a spray-on chemical oven cleaner safe for your particular oven, or will it damage the coating?

The honest answer is that it depends on the liner, and only your own use and care guide names your liner. GE Appliances, Whirlpool, and Samsung each say, in their own words, that a commercial oven cleaner damages a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner over time, and none of the three publishes an exception. None of them says a commercial oven cleaner is fine on an oven with neither coating, so this page does not print that as fact either. If you do reach for a commercial oven cleaner, the sodium hydroxide most of them contain is a real chemical-burn hazard, and this page covers the gloves, the ventilation, and the rinse that go with it.

GE Appliances (ge-range-manually-cleaning-a-self-clean-oven, accessed 2026-08-04) states: 'Do not clean your Self-Clean oven with commercial oven cleaners, even those specifically designed for use with Self-Clean ovens.' GE Appliances (ge-range-problem-cleaners-self-clean-continuous-clean, accessed 2026-08-04) states, naming a specific product: 'No commercial oven cleaner even those stating for self-clean models (Easy OFF, etc.) of any kind should be used in or around any part of the self-clean oven,' and separately, for the other GE liner type: 'Do not use commercial oven cleaners in the continuous clean ovens - it can/will damage the porous surface.' Whirlpool (whirlpool-routine-oven-cleaning-range, accessed 2026-08-04) gives a broader instruction that does not name self-clean or continuous-clean specifically: 'Do not use oven cleaners. Foods react with porcelain at high temperatures, and staining, etching, pitting, or faint white spots can result.' Samsung (samsung-how-to-clean-your-samsung-oven, first accessed 2026-07-29, re-read 2026-08-04) states: 'Do not use oven cleaners to clean the oven. Commercial oven cleaners or oven liners should NEVER be used in or around any part of the oven. Residue from oven cleaners will damage the inside of the oven during a self-cleaning operation.' The three makers agree that a commercial oven cleaner damages a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner, and none of the documents read for this page names an exception for either coating. What they do not agree on is scope: GE conditions its instruction on the oven having a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner specifically, while Whirlpool's routine-cleaning instruction is unqualified and applies to any range with a porcelain oven interior, self-clean or not. No document read for this page states plainly that a commercial oven cleaner is safe on a plain oven liner with neither coating. This page does not print that as fact either. Read the use and care guide for your own oven before you buy or apply a commercial oven cleaner.

When to use a professional

Speak to the maker of your oven if you are not sure of your liner type.

If a commercial oven cleaner gets on your skin or in your eyes, flush the area with water immediately. Contact a doctor immediately.

If your eyes feel irritated or you feel dizzy, stop the ammonia method. Leave the kitchen for fresh air.

This page does not repair damage from a wrong cleaner. Speak to the maker of your oven or to an appliance technician.

Use a self-clean cycle or a steam-clean cycle if soil is heavy and baked on.

Common questions

How do I clean the inside of my oven without running the self-clean cycle?

Wash the cavity with warm water and a little dish soap on a soft cloth, the way GE Appliances and Whirlpool both describe for a self-clean oven. For soil that will not wipe away, GE also gives an overnight ammonia method, and both makers approve a non-abrasive cleaner such as Bar Keepers Friend Liquid Soft Cleanser or affresh. What none of them approve is a commercial spray oven cleaner on a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner, because the chemical etches and discolors the coating over time.

Can I use oven cleaner spray in a self-cleaning oven?

GE Appliances, Whirlpool, and Samsung each say no, even for products marketed as safe for self-cleaning ovens. GE names Easy-Off specifically as an example of a product to avoid on its own self-clean liner. Continuous use of a chemical oven cleaner etches and discolors the special coating, and GE says that eventually the self-clean cycle stops working as well. If you already used one, GE says to rinse every trace of it out before you next run the self-clean cycle.

What is the difference between a self-clean liner and a continuous-clean liner?

A self-clean liner is a smooth surface that a high-temperature pyrolytic cycle burns clean, and you hand-clean it with mild products between cycles. A continuous-clean liner has a rough, porous coating that absorbs and slowly burns off small spills during ordinary cooking, and it never runs a separate high-heat cycle at all. Both coatings are damaged by a commercial oven cleaner, according to GE Appliances. Your own use and care guide names which one, if either, your oven has.

Is it safe to clean an oven with ammonia?

GE Appliances describes putting a half cup of household ammonia in an open container inside a cold, closed oven overnight, which loosens burned-on grease without scrubbing. The one firm rule is not to turn the oven on while the ammonia is inside it. NIOSH's own chemical hazard guide lists eye, nose, and throat irritation among the symptoms of ammonia exposure, which is the reason for that rule. Used the way GE describes it, with the oven off and cool, this is one of the milder methods on this page.

My oven does not have a self-clean cycle. Can I use a regular oven cleaner?

Check your own use and care guide first, because 'no self-clean cycle' is not the same as 'no special coating' — some ovens have a continuous-clean liner with no self-clean cycle at all. If your guide does not warn you off a commercial oven cleaner, follow the product label exactly: gloves, eye protection, ventilation, and a full rinse afterward. The active ingredient in most oven cleaners is sodium hydroxide, which ATSDR says can cause chemical burns to skin and eyes on contact.

My continuous-clean oven still looks dirty. What else can I do?

GE Appliances describes a specific fix for its own continuous-clean ovens: remove the aluminum oven bottom, then run the empty oven at 400°F (about 204°C) for four hours to burn off heavy buildup on the porous coating. GE's own caution is explicit: during that operation the door, the window, and other parts get hot enough to cause burns, so do not touch them. This is a maker-specific process; check that your own guide describes the same steps before you try it.

Can I leave the door gasket alone when I clean the cavity?

Yes, and GE Appliances says you should: avoid rubbing or cleaning the door gasket at all, on the cavity side or on the inside of the door. A worn or scrubbed gasket lets heat escape from the cavity, which is a maintenance problem rather than a cleaning one. If your gasket looks torn or is coming loose, that is a question for the maker of your oven, not for a cleaning product.

  1. v1 · 2026-08-04First draft. Sourced to GE Appliances' and Whirlpool's own hand-cleaning and problem-cleaner support pages, Samsung's own cleaning support page, NIOSH's Pocket Guide entries for ammonia and sodium hydroxide, and ATSDR's Medical Management Guidelines for sodium hydroxide (the last two already registered from a prior record). The chemical-compatibility question the backlog entry flagged is published as a per-model instruction to consult the use and care guide, never as a verified number: GE, Whirlpool, and Samsung agree that a commercial oven cleaner damages a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner, but they differ in scope (GE conditions its instruction on the liner type; Whirlpool's is unqualified) and none of the three states that a commercial cleaner is safe on a plain, uncoated liner, so that gap is not printed as fact. The ammonia method and the ventilation, glove, and rinse steps for a commercial oven cleaner are both attributed to their source and carry hazard notices placed before the step each protects. Source entries are staged in data/sources-additions-clean-an-oven-cavity-without-the-self-clean-cycle.json for merge into data/sources.json by an authorized actor; the record holds on check 3 until that merge happens.
