Common questions
Why does my pressure washer hose leak where it connects?
Almost always the O-ring inside the coupling, not the hose itself. Briggs & Stratton's own troubleshooting guide asks exactly this question — 'Is the high-pressure hose leaking?' — and answers it with 'Check the O-rings. If damaged, remove old O-ring with a small flathead screwdriver, and replace with new one.' A worn or missing O-ring is a cheap part, and replacing it is usually faster than replacing the whole hose.
What's the difference between M22 and quick-connect pressure washer hoses?
M22 is a threaded fitting: you turn a collar to tighten or loosen it, and it is described by Simpson (FNA Group) as 'industry standard for all brands.' Quick-connect, or QC, uses a spring-loaded slip collar instead: you pull the collar back, push the fitting together, and release the collar to lock it. The two are not interchangeable, so a replacement hose has to carry the same connector as the one it replaces.
Can I tape or patch a cut in a pressure washer hose?
No. Simpson's own guidance is direct: 'Never use or try to repair a damaged high-pressure hose. Serious injury or even death can result.' Sun Joe's manual gives the same instruction for its own machines: examine hoses regularly, replace one that is damaged, and do not attempt to mend it. A hose that holds water at rest can still fail once it is back under pressure.
What pressure rating do I need for a replacement pressure washer hose?
At least the rated pressure of your own machine, which is printed on the machine's data plate or in its manual. Simpson's instruction is to 'always choose one with the same or higher pressure rating' as the original. No manufacturer publishes one number that applies to every machine, because the rating is a property of your specific pump, not of hoses in general — so this page will not print a PSI figure for you to shop against.
Why does my pressure washer pulse or surge while I'm using it?
A kinked high-pressure hose is one of the causes Sun Joe's own troubleshooting table lists for a pulsating machine, alongside a partly blocked nozzle and an inadequate water supply. Straightening the hose out is the first thing to check before you suspect the pump itself.
Is it worth replacing the O-ring myself, or should I just buy a new hose?
Try the O-ring first. It is the part named directly in Briggs & Stratton's own leak troubleshooting, it costs far less than a hose, and the fix is small: pry the old one out with a small flat tool and press a matching replacement into the same groove. Move to a replacement hose only when the hose itself is cut, abraded, kinked beyond straightening, or still leaks after a fresh O-ring.
