BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin. This procedure is general reference information, not professional advice. Equipment varies by manufacturer, model, and year. Always follow the documentation supplied with your equipment — where it differs from this page, follow the manufacturer. Verify that you have the tools, the working conditions, and the ability to do this task safely. If anything is unclear, if the equipment is damaged, or if the task exceeds your experience, stop and use a qualified professional. You are responsible for your own safety and for the outcome. This site accepts no liability for any loss, damage, or injury arising from the use of this information.

Specifications marked unverified could not be traced to a manufacturer source. Do not rely on them — obtain the value from your equipment documentation.

Summary

Worn wiper blades are one of the cheapest problems on a car to fix and one of the easiest to put off until it is already raining. On most vehicles the job needs no tools at all: the old blade unclips from the arm and the new one clicks on. This page covers the whole thing — parking somewhere safe, working out which blade and which connector your car takes, getting the old blade off without letting the arm drop onto the glass, and testing the wipe before you drive.

What this page will not do is print a blade size or a connector type for your car, because there are thousands of combinations and the authority for yours is your owner's manual or the blade maker's vehicle guide. It also will not tell you how to raise your wiper arm, and that is deliberate: Mazda says to move the wipers to a service position first, Tesla puts that mode behind a touchscreen menu, and Toyota warns that lifting an arm parked under the hood can damage the hood. The replacement interval is the one thing the manufacturers here agree on. Toyota gives six to 12 months and Tesla says at least once a year, so this page publishes six to 12 months and names where it came from.

When to use a professional

Stop the work if the wiper arm is bent. Stop the work if the wiper arm does not hold the new wiper blade. Stop the work if the wiper arm does not touch the windshield along its full length. Speak to a vehicle repair shop.

This procedure does not include a replacement of the wiper arm. Mazda tells owners to speak to a dealer for that work, and other manufacturers give the same boundary. Speak to a vehicle repair shop if the wiper motor does not move the wiper arm.

A crack in the windshield is not safe. Speak to a glass specialist about a crack or a deep scratch in the windshield.

Common questions

How often should I change my windshield wipers?

Toyota says wiper blades usually last 6 to 12 months and adds straight away that this is not a set rule, because blade quality, how much you use them and where you park all change the answer. Tesla's own service documentation lands in the same place and asks for replacement at least once a year. That agreement between two manufacturers is the only reason this page prints an interval at all. Mazda gives the practical test instead of a number: when the wipers no longer clean well, the blades are probably worn or cracked, so replace them. If the wipe gets worse before six months are up, that is your answer — the calendar is a backstop, not a rule.

What size wiper blades do I need for my car?

This page will not guess, and neither should a parts listing you have not checked. The size comes from your owner's manual or from the vehicle guide the blade manufacturer publishes. Two things catch people out: the driver's side and the passenger's side are often different lengths on the same car, and a rear wiper is usually different again. Tesla's documentation for one model, for example, calls for a 26 inch blade on the driver's side and a 20 inch blade on the passenger's side — which is exactly why a single number for your car has to come from your car's documentation.

Do I need any tools to change wiper blades?

Usually not. Toyota says replacing wiper blades in most cars typically does not require tools. The two things worth having are a folded cloth or towel to lay on the glass, which Tesla's documentation asks for so a dropped arm cannot scratch or crack the windshield, and the instruction leaflet that came in the box with the new blades.

Why do I have to put the wipers in a service position first?

Because on a lot of modern cars the wiper arms park underneath the trailing edge of the hood, and there is not enough room to swing them up from there. Toyota's guidance is explicit that lifting wipers that are in the retracted position below the hood can make them contact the hood and damage the wiper, the hood, or both. Mazda tells owners to always move the blades to the service position before lifting them off the windshield. Tesla puts the same function behind Controls, then Service, then Wiper Service Mode. The method is different on every car, so this is one of the things you have to look up rather than copy from a page like this one.

My new wiper blades still streak. What did I do wrong?

Often nothing, and the glass is the first thing to rule out. Mazda warns that running the wipers on dry glass scratches the windshield and damages the wiper rubber, and asks owners to spray washer fluid before operating the wipers when the glass is dry — a windshield that has been dry-wiped will streak with any blade on it. The next thing to check is whether the blade actually locked onto the arm: Tesla asks for a push-pull test and says to make sure the new blade is locked in place and does not move. After that, check the length against your owner's manual, because a blade that is wrong for the arm lifts off the glass at one end.

Can I use my wipers to scrape ice off the windshield?

No, and Mazda spells out why: in freezing temperatures the wiper rubber can freeze to the glass, and operating the wipers while they are frozen to it can damage the wiper rubber and the wiper motor. One cold morning can undo a brand-new pair and take the motor with them. The same manual asks you to put the wiper lever in the OFF position while you are removing ice or snow or cleaning the windshield, which also stops an automatic wiper starting under your hands. Clear the ice with a scraper or the defroster, free the blades from the glass, and only then switch the wipers on.

Is there actually a legal standard for windshield wipers?

Yes, for the system the car was built with. FMVSS No. 104, at 49 CFR 571.104, requires every vehicle to have a power-driven windshield wiping system, requires at least two speeds with one of them at least 45 cycles per minute and another at least 20, and sets minimum wiped percentages for three areas of the windshield: 80 percent of Area A, 94 percent of Area B and 99 percent of Area C on a passenger car. The standard applies to the vehicle as manufactured, not to the blades you buy later — but it is a reasonable way to think about what a worn blade is taking away from you.
