When to use a professional
Stop the check if a wheel nut does not reach the torque value. Do not force the wrench. A damaged stud or a cross-threaded nut needs a qualified technician.
Stop the vehicle if a wheel wobbles, moves, or makes an unusual noise while you drive to do this check. Do not continue to drive. Call for a tow or a mobile technician.

Common questions
How tight should my lug nuts (wheel nuts) be?
There is no single answer, and this page will not guess. The correct torque is set by whoever made your vehicle and is usually printed in the owner's manual, on the vehicle's door pillar sticker, or on the paperwork from your tire shop. As one real example, Ford's 2024 F-150 owner's manual lists 150 lb-ft (204 N·m) for its standard wheel nuts, a very different figure from a small sedan. Read the value for your own vehicle rather than borrowing a number from a forum or a friend's car.
Do I need to check my lug nuts after 50 miles, 100 miles, or some other distance?
That depends on who made your vehicle, and manufacturers do not agree with each other. Ford's current owner's manuals ask for a check within 100 miles (160 km) of any wheel disturbance. General Motors' guidance for some models with dual rear wheels asks for checks at 100, 1,000, and 6,000 miles (160, 1,600, and 10,000 km). Follow the distance printed in your own vehicle's documentation or on the paperwork the fitter gave you, not a number from a different vehicle or a different make.
I hear a clicking or ticking noise a day or two after getting new tires. Is that a loose wheel?
It can be, and it is worth checking rather than ignoring. A loose wheel nut, a stone caught in the wheel trim, or a brake component can all produce a clicking or ticking sound. Do this check first: if every wheel nut is at the correct torque and the noise continues, have a qualified technician look at the vehicle. Do not keep driving on a wheel you suspect is loose.
Can I just snug the lug nuts with a regular lug wrench instead of using a torque wrench?
A plain lug wrench with no torque scale cannot tell you when you have reached the correct value, or whether you are above or below it. Both an under-tightened and an over-tightened wheel nut are problems: one can loosen further, and the other can damage the stud or the wheel. What if the tire shop already used a torque wrench? Do I still need to check?
Yes. Vehicle manufacturers ask for this re-check regardless of how carefully the wheel was refitted. A wheel can settle slightly onto the hub during the first miles of driving after it is reinstalled, and that settling can leave a nut reading below its original torque. This is why the re-check distance exists in owner's manuals at all, not because the fitter's work is assumed to be wrong.
What is the difference between a lug nut and a wheel nut?
Nothing functional; they are the same fastener, and both terms are common. 'Lug nut' is the more common term in everyday conversation in North America. 'Wheel nut' is closer to what many manufacturers print in their own documentation, including outside North America. This page uses 'wheel nut' in its instructions and lists 'lug nut' as a term you are likely to search for.
My wheel came loose, or a lug nut fell off, while I was driving. What do I do?
Treat this as an emergency, not a routine check. Pull over safely, away from moving traffic, as soon as you reasonably can. Do not continue driving on a wheel that has come loose or is missing a nut. Call for a tow or roadside assistance rather than trying to drive the vehicle to a shop.
