Summary
A red lamp with the word BRAKE in it is not one warning. FMVSS 135, the federal standard for light vehicle brake systems, lets a single lamp stand for any of seven separate conditions: a gross loss of brake fluid or brake system pressure, an electrical failure in the antilock or proportioning system, an applied parking brake, worn-out brake linings, a loss of electrical power on a vehicle with electrically actuated brakes, a failed brake control circuit, or a failed regenerative braking system on an electric vehicle. The standard requires the lamp to be red, requires it to come on for every one of those, and does not require it to tell you which one it found. One of the seven is something you can settle yourself in about a minute. The other six are not.
The second thing worth knowing is that the pattern of this lamp carries no information at all. On the tire pressure lamp a flash means one thing and a steady light means another, and on the check engine lamp that same difference decides whether you keep driving. Here it decides nothing: FMVSS 135 S5.5.4 and FMVSS 105 S5.3.4 both let the manufacturer choose a continuous or a flashing indication for the same condition. What this page does is separate the red lamp from the yellow ABS lamp, rule out the parking brake, and tell you exactly what to write down before you telephone anybody. What it does not do is give you a repair, because work inside a hydraulic brake system is on this site's exclusion list and the boundary is the point of the page.

When to use a professional
Do not move the vehicle while the brake system warning indicator is on. This indicator is red. Speak to a qualified technician. Only a technician can find which of the seven conditions is present.
This page gives no repair. A qualified technician does all work inside the hydraulic brake system. Never repair the brake line. Never repair the master cylinder. Never open a brake caliper. Do not put brake fluid in the reservoir.
The antilock brake system indicator is a different condition. This indicator is yellow. Mazda tells owners that the brakes then operate as a vehicle without an antilock brake system. Speak to a qualified technician as soon as you can.
If the vehicle must move, ask for a tow truck. Ask the technician which condition caused the indication. Ask the technician for a written estimate before the work starts. Keep the estimate with the documentation for the vehicle.
Common questions
What does the red brake light on my dashboard actually mean?
It means one of seven things, and it will not say which. FMVSS 135 S5.5.1 lists the conditions a single common brake indicator must respond to: a gross loss of brake fluid or brake system pressure, any electrical failure in the antilock or variable proportioning system, application of the parking brake, worn-out brake linings where the maker chose an optical warning, loss of electrical power on a vehicle with electrically actuated brakes, failure of a brake control circuit, and failure of the regenerative braking system on an electric vehicle. The standard permits one lamp to cover all of them, and when it does it must simply display the word Brake. Six of the seven need a technician. The seventh is the parking brake, and that one you can settle in the driveway.
Can I drive with the brake warning light on?
No, and the manufacturers say so more bluntly than we would dare to. Mazda's own owner's manual warns that driving with the brake system warning light illuminated is dangerous, that it indicates your brakes may not work at all or that they could completely fail at any time, and that if the light remains illuminated after you have checked that the parking brake is fully released you should have the brakes inspected immediately. Tesla's public service documentation says that if the red brake indicator appears while driving you should stop as soon as safety permits, do not continue driving, and contact Tesla. Mazda also notes that braking effectiveness may diminish, so the pedal may need a much harder push than normal. If the car has to move, it moves on a tow truck.
My brake light is flashing rather than steady. Is that a different fault?
No, and this is the single most counter-intuitive thing on the page. FMVSS 135 S5.5.4 says that when a visual warning indicator is activated it may be continuous or flashing, and FMVSS 105 S5.3.4 says the same for the heavier vehicles it covers: an activated lamp may be steady burning or flashing. The choice belongs to the vehicle manufacturer, not to the fault, so the pattern tells you nothing about which condition is present. There is exactly one exception, and it is not subtle: a vehicle built without a split service brake system must flash and must also sound an audible signal, and its lamp reads STOP-BRAKE FAILURE. That is the opposite of the tire pressure lamp, where a flash then a steady light is a defined and different message.
The light came on for a couple of seconds when I turned the key and then went out. Is something wrong?
No — that is the lamp proving it works, and the standard requires it. FMVSS 135 S5.5.2 requires every indicator to be activated as a check function, either automatically when the ignition is turned to on with the engine not running, or by a single manual action such as a test button. FMVSS 105 S5.3.2 imposes the same duty on heavier vehicles. The standard also requires the manufacturer to explain the brake check function test procedure in the owner's manual, which is why the length of the flash differs between cars and why this page will not print a number for it. What matters is the opposite case: a lamp that never comes on at ignition is a lamp that cannot warn you, and that is worth mentioning to a technician.
What is the difference between the red brake light and the yellow ABS light?
Colour is the difference, and the standard sets it deliberately. FMVSS 135 S5.5.5 requires the letters and background of the brake indicator to contrast with one of the colours being red, and requires a separate antilock indicator to use yellow instead, labelled Antilock, Anti-lock or ABS. Mazda explains what the yellow one costs you: the ABS control unit has found a fault in itself, your brakes will work normally as if the vehicle had no ABS, and the brake assist system stops working while it is lit. That is serious but it is not the same as a red lamp. If both come on together, Mazda tells owners to stop in a safe place immediately, because the rear wheels can lock sooner than normal in an emergency stop.
The light stays on even though the handbrake is down. What now?
Then the parking brake was not the cause and you are into the other six. Application of the parking brake is condition (c) in FMVSS 135 S5.5.1, and it is the only one on the list that the driver can undo, which is why every manufacturer tells you to rule it out first. Release it fully, look at the panel, and if the red lamp is still lit treat the car as unsafe to move. Electric parking brakes complicate this a little, because a fault in the parking brake mechanism itself can hold the lamp on even when you have asked it to release. Either way the answer is the same: stop, write down what you saw, and telephone a technician.
Can I just top up the brake fluid and carry on?
This page will not tell you to, and neither will the manufacturers. Tesla's own do-it-yourself documentation says in plain words: do not top up your brake fluid, and prints the topping-up steps for information and future reference only. Mazda's manual explains why the level matters more than the fluid: a low level normally means the linings have worn, but it can also mean the system is leaking, and either could cause the brakes to fail. Only a qualified technician can tell one from the other, and only a qualified technician should be inside the master cylinder or a brake line. Adding fluid to a leaking system hides the warning without fixing anything, which is the worst of both outcomes.
Why won't this page tell me which of the seven faults I have?
Because the lamp does not carry that information and no web page can invent it. A single common indicator is permitted by federal standard to mean any of seven conditions, it is not required to distinguish them, and its pattern is chosen by the manufacturer rather than by the fault. Anything that claimed to narrow it down from your description would be guessing with your brakes. What this page can honestly do is give you the two facts that are free — which colour is lit, and whether the parking brake changes it — plus a note of where the fluid sits, and send you to somebody with the equipment to read the rest.

No hydraulic value is published. The 1.5 MPa (218 psi) differential-pressure trigger in S5.5.1(a)(2) was read and deliberately left off the page: it is a compliance test threshold rather than a number a driver acts on, and config.json plausibility_bounds would in any case hold it as an implausible household pressure. Three specifications publish as consult-the-manufacturer rather than as numbers. NOTE FOR THE PUBLISHER: the four verified specifications carry spec_key null, so check 2 reports four warnings and none of them is cross-checked against data/specs.json. That is not an oversight. This session was instructed not to write data/specs.json because several agents are working in the repository at once, and the skill's alternative — republish the value as consult-the-manufacturer — would have meant refusing to tell a reader that a federally mandated indicator is red. The four values are non-numeric and cannot drift the way a torque figure can. Register them before this page publishes. Two sequencing defects were found and corrected before the record was gated, and they are recorded because both would have produced a confidently wrong answer. First, an earlier draft set the parking brake again at the end of the parking-brake section and then told the reader to switch the ignition on: the parking brake is condition (c) of S5.5.1, so that sequence relights the indicator and the reader would have read a correctly working vehicle as a fault. The parking brake is now reset only after the ignition checks, immediately before the reader gets out of the vehicle. Second, an earlier draft concluded 'fault' from a red indicator that was still on ten seconds after the ignition was switched on. Mazda's own operation check says the indicator goes out a short time after the ignition is on OR when the engine is started, so on some vehicles a steady indicator with the engine off is normal. The conclusion is now drawn only with the engine running.
