Summary

Slipping foam sleeves onto the first few feet of pipe at a water heater is one of the genuinely easy jobs. The sleeves cost a few dollars, they push on by hand, and the only cutting is with a kitchen knife. This page covers the pipe you can reach standing on the floor next to the unit, which is where most of the heat is lost and where the work needs no access equipment. It does not cover pipe in a crawl space, pipe in an attic, or anything that involves getting off the floor.

The number that matters on this page is not the R-value. It is how far the insulation has to stay away from the vent pipe if your water heater burns gas, because foam sleeve is a combustible material and a vent pipe is hot enough to ignite it. This page does not print a single separation figure, and that is a deliberate refusal rather than a gap. ENERGY STAR says building codes usually require one inch of clearance from metal flues and two inches from masonry chimneys to any combustible material, including insulation. Rheem says in its own manuals that you maintain the clearances specified on the rating plate, and that where its label and its manual disagree the label wins. The figure that governs your water heater is on your water heater, and if you cannot read it, this is not a job to start.

On savings, the honest position is that this page publishes no dollar figure and no percentage. EPA WaterSense states that pipe insulation reduces the rate of heat loss from water sitting in the pipework, and that is a claim we can trace. The specific savings numbers that circulate came from an Energy Saver page on energy.gov which returned 404 when we checked it on 29 July 2026, so they now exist for us only on third-party sites, which makes them unverified by definition.

When to use a professional

Stop if your water heater uses a gas supply and the label is unreadable. Do not estimate the clearance. Do not use a value from a website. A qualified plumber can read the label and can show you the safe positions.

Do not touch the vent pipe, the draft hood or any joint in the vent. Do not move the vent pipe to make room for a sleeve. Do not remove a section of the vent. Combustion gas escapes from a vent that is loose. Carbon monoxide has no smell.

Speak to a qualified plumber for any pipe that you cannot reach from the floor. This page covers the reachable pipe at the water heater and nothing else. Pipe in an attic or in a crawl space needs a different material. It also needs different access.

Do not fit an insulation blanket to the tank as part of this job. Rheem states that a blanket is not necessary on its gas water heaters. Rheem also lists the parts that a blanket must never cover. A blanket is a separate job with its own instructions from your own manufacturer.

Common questions

How far does pipe insulation have to be from the flue?

The figure that governs your water heater is the one on your water heater, and this page will not print a substitute for it. Rheem's own manuals say to maintain the clearances specified on the rating plate, and one of them says outright that where the label and the manual disagree, you follow the label. ENERGY STAR gives the general position that building codes usually require one inch of clearance from metal flues and two inches from masonry chimneys to any combustible material including insulation, and note the word usually. You will also find a six-inch figure quoted widely online for single-wall vent connectors; we could not open a primary source for it on 29 July 2026, so it is not published here. Read your label, and if you cannot read it, this is not a job to start.

Does insulating hot water pipes actually save money?

It reduces heat loss, and beyond that this page does not quote a figure. EPA WaterSense states that pipe insulation reduces the overall rate of heat loss from water sitting in the pipework, both in standby and while hot water is moving through it, and that is a claim traceable to a primary document. The dollar and percentage savings you will see repeated everywhere came from an Energy Saver page on energy.gov, and that page returned 404 when we checked it. A number that now exists only on sites copying each other is exactly what this site refuses to publish. The practical benefit most people actually notice is a shorter wait for hot water at the tap rather than a line on a bill.

What size pipe insulation do I need?

Measure the outside diameter of your pipe and match it to the size printed on the sleeve package, because the two numbering systems do not line up. Copper pipe is sold by a nominal size that is smaller than the pipe's actual outside diameter, so a sleeve bought by the number stamped on the pipe can easily be the wrong one. It is a two-minute measurement with a tape measure and it saves a return trip. If the sleeve slides around loosely once fitted, it is too big and the air gap will undo most of the benefit.

Can I insulate pipes on a gas water heater at all?

Yes, and Rheem supplies pipe insulation in the box with some of its gas units, so the manufacturer clearly expects it. What changes on a gas unit is that there is now a hot vent pipe in the same small space, and foam sleeve is a combustible material. The whole job becomes a question of where the insulation stops rather than whether it goes on. One Rheem power vent manual also caps pipe insulation at half an inch thick, because anything thicker interferes with the air holes on the blower assembly, which is a good example of why the manual for your own unit is the document that matters.

Should I insulate the cold water pipe too?

It is common to do both and there is no safety reason not to, as long as the same clearance from the vent applies to everything you fit. The cold inlet on a storage water heater carries heat backwards out of the tank by convection, which is why many units come with heat traps fitted, so a sleeve on the first stretch of cold pipe is not wasted. In a humid basement it also stops condensation dripping off the cold pipe. Measure it separately, because the hot and cold pipes are not always the same size.

What about wrapping the tank itself in an insulation blanket?

That is a different job and this page deliberately does not cover it. Rheem's position in its power vent manual is that blankets sold to the public for external use on gas water heaters are not necessary, because the heater already meets the standby loss standards, and it warns that unapproved add-ons are not covered by the warranty. If your local code requires one anyway, the manual lists what a blanket must never cover: the operating and warning labels, the top of the heater, the burner access door, the jacket door, the gas control and the relief valve. Follow the instructions that come with the blanket kit and your own manufacturer's manual, not this page.
