Summary

Water pooling near your indoor air conditioning unit is almost always caused by a clogged condensate drain line. As your system cools your home, it also pulls moisture out of the air and drains that water away through a small plastic pipe. Dust, dirt and the occasional spider web collect in that pipe and eventually block it. Many systems have a safety float switch that shuts the whole unit off once the drain pan starts to fill, and a homeowner who does not know that switch exists can read a perfectly working safety feature as a dead system. This page shows you how to clear the line yourself, with a wet/dry vacuum from the outside and distilled vinegar from the inside — the same two DIY steps Carrier and Trane both publish for their own equipment.

It also says where to stop. If the drain pan has cracked, if water still will not flow after you flush the line, or if the system does not restart once you restore power, this page tells you to call an HVAC contractor rather than force the issue. Some homeowners also pour bleach or a shop-bought drain cleaner down the line; neither Carrier nor Trane states that this is safe for the pipe, so this page does not say so either, and it routes that question to the manufacturer or a contractor instead of guessing.

When to use a professional

Stop if the drain pan has a crack. Stop if no water flows from the outdoor end of the drain line after you flush it. Call an HVAC contractor.

Stop if the air conditioner does not start after you restore power. A safety switch stops the system again if water is still in the pan. Do not put a metal tool into the drain line. A tool can crack the pipe.

This page names only distilled vinegar for the drain line. Ask the system manufacturer or an HVAC contractor before you put bleach or another chemical into the line.

Common questions

Why is water leaking from my air handler?

It's almost always the condensate drain line. As your air conditioner cools your home, it also pulls moisture out of the air, and that water is supposed to run outside through a small drain line. When the line clogs with dust, dirt or mold, the water backs up into the drain pan and then overflows onto the floor or the ceiling below. A cracked or rusted drain pan can cause the same puddle even with a perfectly clear line. Carrier and Trane both list a clogged drain line as the single most common cause of an air conditioner leaking water.

My air conditioner just shut off by itself. Is it broken?

Maybe not. Many central air conditioners and heat pumps have a small safety switch, often called a float switch, sitting in or under the condensate drain pan. When the pan starts to fill because the drain line is blocked, the switch trips and shuts the whole system down before water can overflow into your home. Trane's own troubleshooting guide says this switch is not on every system, so on a system without one a clogged line keeps running until the water spills out on its own. Clear the blocked line first, then try restarting the system before you assume the unit itself has failed.

How do I clean an AC condensate drain line myself?

Turn the system off first, at the thermostat and at the outdoor disconnect switch. Then work from both ends of the line: use a wet/dry vacuum to suction the clog out through the drain line's exit outside, and pour a cup of distilled vinegar into the access point near the indoor unit to dissolve what is left. Carrier and Trane both publish this same two-step method for homeowners. If the line still will not drain afterward, or if you cannot find either end of the line, call an HVAC contractor rather than force a tool into the pipe.

Can I pour bleach down the AC drain line instead of vinegar?

This page does not tell you to, and it will not give you a bleach dose or a contact time. Carrier's own guidance only says that some homeowners use vinegar or bleach, and that neither one reliably prevents every clog. Neither Carrier nor Trane states that bleach is safe for the drain line material, so this page routes that question to the system manufacturer or an HVAC contractor rather than guess. Distilled vinegar is the one substance both manufacturers name directly, which is why it's the only one this page recommends.

Do all air conditioners have a float switch that shuts off water in the pan?

No. Trane's own troubleshooting page states plainly that not every air handler has a condensate overflow switch installed. Some homes only get one added as an accessory during a repair or a new installation. If your system has no switch and the drain line clogs, it keeps cooling right up until the pan overflows, so acting on the early symptoms — a musty smell or a puddle near the indoor unit — matters even more than usual.
