How do I replace the toner cartridge and the drum unit in a laser printer?A laser or LED-page printer gives two different low-supply messages, and they point at two different parts with two different jobs. A toner message (Toner Low, Replace Toner) means the powder that forms the printed image is running out. A drum message (Replace Drum, Drum Stop) means the light-sensitive roller that carries that image onto the page has reached the end of its rated life. The two parts wear at different rates, and readers who buy a replacement often buy the one the message did not name.

How do I test my internet speed properly so my provider believes me when I say it is slowA speed test run once, over wifi, from whatever device was closest, answers a different question than the one your provider needs answered. It measures the radio link between that device and your router at that exact moment, with everything else in the house free to use the same connection. None of that is what your service agreement actually promises you, so a provider can reasonably say that a single low reading proves nothing. "My wifi feels slow" and "my internet service is under-delivering" are different claims, and only one of them is something a provider is obliged to fix.
This page sets out a method for producing results a provider has a harder time dismissing: a wired connection with nothing else running, repeated more than once and at more than one time of day, written down with the date and time of each reading, and compared against the download and upload speed printed on your own account or contract rather than an advertisement. It does not print a single speed below which a connection counts as "too slow", because no manufacturer or government document sets one figure that fits every plan, so that comparison is always against your own contract. How to boot a Mac in safe mode when it won't start up properlySafe mode is the first honest test you can run on a Mac that has started behaving badly. It starts macOS with most of the software you have added switched off, checks the startup disk on the way, and clears a couple of caches. If the fault disappears, something you installed is causing it. If the fault is still there, the problem is not a login item, and you have just saved yourself an evening of uninstalling things at random.
The reason so many people get this wrong is that there are two completely different key sequences and nothing on screen tells you which one applies to you. On an Intel Mac you hold Shift while it starts. On a Mac with Apple silicon you hold the power button instead, wait for a startup options screen, and only then hold Shift. Press Shift at power-on on an Apple silicon Mac and nothing happens at all — which reads exactly like a broken Mac, and sends people to a repair shop who did not need one. So this page opens by making you check the Apple menu and find out which machine is in front of you, and it will not let you skip that.

How to change the WiFi password and network name on a TP-Link Archer AX23 routerThe Wi-Fi name and password your Archer AX23 arrived with are printed on a sticker on the underside of the router, so anyone who has ever turned it over can still get onto your network. Changing both is about ten minutes of work in the router's own settings page. The one thing that catches people out is that the router has two separate passwords: the one you type to get into the settings, and the one your phone types to join the Wi-Fi. How to check MacBook battery health and cycle count, and what the numbers meanThere are two things macOS will tell you about your MacBook's battery, and almost everyone merges them into one. They are not the same thing.
The cycle count is a tally. It counts how many times you have used a full battery's worth of charge — not how many times you have plugged in. Half a charge today and half tomorrow is one cycle, not two. It only ever goes up, and it tells you how much the battery has been used.
The condition — Battery Health, showing Normal or Service Recommended — is a judgement macOS makes right now about how well the battery still holds a charge. It can change, and it is not a simple function of the cycle count.
So a MacBook can have a high cycle count and read Normal, or a low cycle count and read Service Recommended, and neither is a contradiction. You need both numbers, and this page has you write both down.
The part no general answer can give you is the limit. Apple publishes a maximum cycle count for every laptop it has made, it differs by model, and Apple is the only place it exists. This page will not guess it. It shows you how to read your own count, then sends you to Apple's own table to look up the number for your exact model — because the difference between a 300-cycle machine and a 1000-cycle machine is the difference between a battery that is finished and one that is barely started.

How to erase or factory reset a Mac or a Windows computer before you sell it, give it away or donate itSelling, donating or recycling a computer is two separate jobs, not one: taking your account off the machine, and making the data on the drive unreadable. Most people treat a factory reset as if it does both at once, and that assumption breaks in two different ways on two different platforms. Apple's own instructions build the Apple Account sign-out into the erase process on a current Mac, but require it as a separate step done first, before the erase, on an older Mac. Microsoft's own instructions do the opposite of what a Mac owner would expect: you reset the PC first, then remove it from your Microsoft account afterward, at account.microsoft.com/devices, not before.
This page also answers the question that brings a lot of sellers here: how many times do you need to wipe a hard drive, and is a tool like DBAN still necessary? The current answer, from NIST's own 2025 guidance, is that a fixed pass count is outdated thinking for a modern drive, and this page will not print one. How to find out why a laptop runs hot and the fan is loudA laptop that runs hot and has a loud fan is usually one of three different problems wearing the same disguise. Fan noise that stays loud even with nothing running points to a blocked air vent or a background process. Fan noise that only appears during a demanding task, like a video call or a game, is the fan doing its job. Fan noise together with a sudden shutdown while the machine feels hot is a different, more serious fault, and this page routes you straight to the manufacturer for that one.
This page does not open the case, and it does not touch the fan, the heat sink or the thermal paste inside a laptop — that work needs a trained technician and can void a warranty. What it does give you is the safe, external half of the job: clearing the air path, finding the app or process using the processor, and checking the settings that add unnecessary heat. How to find the stop code after a blue screen in Windows, and what the code actually meansA blue screen shows you a stop code for a few seconds and then the PC restarts and takes it away. Without that code you are guessing, and with it you have the one piece of information that every support desk, every Microsoft article and every hardware vendor will ask you for first. This page is about capturing it reliably — off the screen if you are quick, and out of the Windows event log if you were not — and then converting it into the form Microsoft actually documents it under, which is not the form the event log gives you.
That conversion is the part almost nobody knows about. Windows records the code in the event log as an ordinary decimal number, while every Microsoft reference page describes it as a hexadecimal one, so the 159 in your event log and the 0x0000009f in Microsoft's documentation are the same code wearing different clothes. That word is a state of the Windows print queue, not a message from the printer, which is why restarting the printer on its own so often changes nothing. How to free up space on the C drive in Windows 11 and Windows 10 when it says low disk spaceA full drive on Windows is not just a nuisance. It slows the machine down and it can stop Windows updates installing, which is the part that eventually matters. The usual advice is to start deleting things, and that is exactly the wrong order: almost every Windows PC is carrying a few gigabytes of temporary files, update leftovers and unused apps that are not yours and that Windows itself offers to clear. How to get lint out of a phone charging port safely when it won't charge or the cable keeps falling outA charging port that has stopped holding the cable is usually not broken. It is usually full of pocket lint, compressed into a solid pad at the bottom of the port by every cable you have pushed in on top of it. The cable no longer reaches the contacts, so it charges intermittently, or only at one angle, or not at all — and it feels exactly like a failing port.
The fix is genuinely easy. What makes this page worth reading is the list of things that turn a five-minute job into a repair bill, because that list is not folklore: Apple, Google and Samsung each publish it. All three tell you, in their own words, not to put anything into the charging port. Apple tells you not to use compressed air on an iPhone and not to get moisture into any opening. On one point the manufacturers do not agree, and this page publishes the disagreement rather than picking a side. Samsung tells Galaxy owners to blow gently into the charging port. How to make a Windows recovery USB drive, and how it differs from a Windows installation USBA recovery drive is a USB stick that can start your PC when Windows itself will not start, and hand you the repair tools. Windows builds it from the files already on your machine, which is why it is worth making now, while the PC still works, rather than on the morning it does not. Making one erases the USB stick completely, so the first half of this page is about choosing a stick you are willing to lose the contents of. Microsoft's own article is blunt about that erase and this page does not soften it.

How to run First Aid in Disk Utility to fix disk errors on a MacFirst Aid is the disk repair tool built into every Mac. It looks for errors in the formatting and directory structure of a disk — the bookkeeping that tells macOS where your files are — and fixes what it can. Apps quitting for no reason, a file that will not open, an external drive behaving oddly: all of those can come from directory damage, and all are worth one First Aid run before you assume the worst.
Two things about it are worth knowing before you click Run, and most pages leave both out.
The first is that you back up before you run it, not after. Apple's own instruction is to have a current backup in place first, and the reason is blunt: a disk that is failing mechanically can die during the repair. First Aid asks a struggling drive to do a lot of reading and writing at once, which is exactly the workload a dying drive is worst at. Most of the time it is fine. When it is not, the backup is the only thing between you and a total loss, and you cannot make one afterwards.
The second is the order. A Mac disk is not one thing — it is a device, holding a container, holding volumes, and First Aid runs on each separately. Apple's documented order is bottom-up: start at the last volume, work up through every volume, then every container, then the device itself. People habitually select the device, run it once, and conclude the disk is fine. It is not the same check.

How to run a nozzle check on an inkjet printer and decide whether to clean the print headAn inkjet printer builds its ink pattern with hundreds of tiny nozzles, and a nozzle check pattern is the fastest way to see whether any of them are blocked. This page walks through printing that pattern, reading it, cleaning the print head only when the pattern shows a fault, and printing the pattern again to check whether cleaning worked. The method is the same on almost every maker's printer: print, read, clean if needed, print again, compare.
What this page will not do is print one universal number for how many times you can clean before you stop. Epson's own documentation allows three standard cleaning cycles before a mandatory twelve-hour wait. Canon's documentation for its PIXMA G7000 series allows two standard cleanings before it asks for a deep clean, then a twenty-four-hour wait if that does not work either. Brother publishes cleaning intensities instead of a cycle count. Cleaning more than your printer's own limit wastes ink and, on many printers, can fill the waste ink pad early. How to set up automatic backups on Windows 11 to an external hard drive with File HistoryFile History is the backup that comes with Windows and copies your own files — documents, pictures, videos, music — to an external drive on a schedule, keeping older versions so you can go back to the file as it was last Tuesday. It is not the only backup Microsoft ships, and the difference matters: Windows Backup, the newer app, syncs your folders to OneDrive and your settings to your Microsoft account, which is a different thing solving a different problem. How to wipe a phone before selling it or trading it in, without leaving it locked to your accountAlmost everyone does this in the wrong order. You wipe the phone first, feel organised about it, and hand over a device that is still welded to your account — and now neither of you can clear it, because the only thing that unlocks it is a password the new owner will never have. The wipe is not the part that releases the phone. Taking the account off it is. That has to happen while you are still signed in, on a phone that still has your data on it, which feels backwards and is the entire reason people get it wrong.
The two platforms do not agree on how this works, and there is no single sequence that covers both. Apple wants you to sign out of your Apple Account first and then run Erase All Content and Settings, and Apple's own documentation states that the erase is what switches Activation Lock off. Google is blunter: remove every Google account from the phone as a separate operation, then go back into Settings and start the factory reset. Google states plainly that a protected phone which is reset with the account still on it cannot be used at all without a Google Account that was already synced to it.

How to work out why my home wifi is so slow or keeps dropping outSlow wifi is four different faults wearing the same costume. The problem can be in one device, in the radio link between that device and the router, in the router or modem, or upstream in the internet service you are paying for. They feel identical from the sofa, and every one of them has a different fix — which is why the single most common mistake is to start changing router settings before knowing which of the four you have.
This page does not change your network. It measures it. You take a speed reading in each room, repeat it on a second device, repeat it through a cable if you have one, restart the modem and router in the order Microsoft documents, and then work through the radio conditions and the Windows settings. At the end you have a sheet of numbers that either tells you the answer or gives your internet provider something better than "the wifi is bad". Is my phone charger safe to use? How to tell if a charging cable or wall charger is damaged, counterfeit or has been recalledA charger or a charging cable does not announce that it has failed. This page walks through the physical signs you can check yourself, with no meter and no tool: damage to the plug or the cable, unusual heat, a buzzing sound, a smell of hot plastic, how firmly the plug sits in the outlet, and whether the charger carries a genuine certification mark. It covers a USB wall charger, its cable, and the power brick for a phone, a tablet or a laptop. Apple, Google and Samsung each publish a version of the same instruction: a charger or a cable that shows one of these signs gets stopped and replaced, not repaired.
This page does not print a wattage, a voltage, or a current figure, because that number is specific to your own charger and is printed on it. What it gives you instead is how to read your own label, how to tell an accredited certification mark from an absent one, and how to check the model against the public recall list the Consumer Product Safety Commission keeps. Place a mesh node or a range extender and prove that it improved coverageBuying a range extender or a mesh node is the usual fix for a room the wifi does not reach, and it is also the step people get wrong most often. The instinct is to put the new device as far from the router as the cable or the outlet allows, on the idea that further away means more coverage. TP-Link's own instructions say the opposite: the device has to hear a strong signal from the router before it can rebroadcast one, so a spot too far away gives you a weak extension of a weak signal, or a mesh node that never syncs properly. This page measures the dead spot first, places the device where TP-Link or NETGEAR document that it belongs, reads the device's own signal indicator to confirm the spot is good enough, and then measures again so you have evidence the move helped rather than a guess.
This page gives placement rules published by TP-Link for its RE-series extenders and its Deco mesh system, and by NETGEAR for its Orbi mesh system. It does not give a number for every other brand — for those, it routes you to your own system's app or support site rather than guessing. What to do when you drop your phone in water, and why rice is the wrong answerThe rice thing is wrong, and it is not this page saying so — it is Apple, in its own support documentation, in a list headed with things not to do. Apple's stated reason is not that rice fails to absorb water. It is that small particles of rice get into the phone and damage it. So the folk remedy does not merely waste a day of drying time you could have spent doing something that works; it introduces a second problem on top of the first one.
What replaces it is unglamorous and specific. Get the cable out, get the excess liquid out by tapping the phone with the connector pointing down, and then leave it somewhere dry with air moving over it. Apple publishes two intervals for what happens next: wait at least 30 minutes before you try charging at all, and if the phone still reports liquid, give it up to a day, because full drying can take 24 hours. The reason the waiting matters is corrosion — Apple states that charging through a wet connector can corrode the pins on the connector or the cable, and that the damage can be permanent. The alert is not the phone being fussy. It is the phone refusing to destroy itself.
Two things this page will not do. It will not print the location of the liquid contact indicator for your model, because Apple publishes that only as a per-model drawing and there is no text version to quote; you get sent to Apple's own table instead. Why does my laser printer print faded, streaky, or smudge when I touch it?A laser or LED-page printer builds an image with three parts working together: a toner cartridge, an imaging or drum unit, and a fuser. Any one of the three can fail on its own, and each failure looks different on the page. Print that is light or grey all over usually points at the toner cartridge or the imaging unit. A line or a streak that repeats in the same place on every page usually points at the imaging or drum unit. Marks that repeat down one page at an even spacing point at whichever part turns once per that spacing — the manufacturer's own chart names it, and this page will not guess. Toner that smears or rubs off after the page is printed points at the fuser, the part that uses heat and pressure to bond toner to paper.
