BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin. This procedure is general reference information, not professional advice. Equipment varies by manufacturer, model, and year. Always follow the documentation supplied with your equipment — where it differs from this page, follow the manufacturer. Verify that you have the tools, the working conditions, and the ability to do this task safely. If anything is unclear, if the equipment is damaged, or if the task exceeds your experience, stop and use a qualified professional. You are responsible for your own safety and for the outcome. This site accepts no liability for any loss, damage, or injury arising from the use of this information.

Specifications marked unverified could not be traced to a manufacturer source. Do not rely on them — obtain the value from your equipment documentation.

Summary

A dehumidifier that runs, hums, and shows a normal display, but leaves the bucket empty or barely damp, usually has one of a short list of causes, and most of them are not a broken machine. The humidity target can sit above the room's real humidity, so the compressor never switches on to remove any water. The room itself can be too cold: ENERGY STAR states that frost can form on the coil below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, around 18 degrees Celsius, and a frosted dehumidifier cycles its compressor on and off without collecting water until it defrosts. A connected drain hose can be sending the water somewhere other than the bucket, which is expected, not a fault. This page works through these checkable causes in order.

This page will not repair the dehumidifier's sealed cooling system, connect a drain hose for the first time, or size a room for a replacement unit — separate pages on this site already cover the drain hose and the room-capacity chart in full, and a separate page indexes the fault codes that several manufacturers publish for their own machines. What this page does is decide, from the humidity setting down to the sealed system, which of the ordinary and checkable causes explains an empty bucket, and say plainly when the answer is a call to the manufacturer instead.

Examine the bucket and the drain hose

Estimated 2 min

NOTEA connected hose can carry water away from the bucket on purpose.
  1. Examine the drain hose connection at the back of the dehumidifier, if the dehumidifier has one.
    • A connected hose can carry water to a floor drain or a container instead of to the bucket.
    • A connected hose can leave the bucket empty on purpose.
<1mReport a problem with step 1, Examine the bucket and the drain hose
  2. Look for water at the open end of the drain hose.
<1mReport a problem with step 2, Examine the bucket and the drain hose

Recall notice

NOTICE

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 23-262

On 16 August 2023 the CPSC announced the recall of about 1.56 million Gree-made dehumidifiers, sold under the Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze brands and manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. The notice states that the dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards, and reports at least 23 fires, 688 overheating incidents and $168,000 in property damage. Consumers are told to immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact Gree for a refund. If your machine is old, check its model number against the CPSC list before you spend time troubleshooting it.

When to use a professional

This page checks the setting, the room temperature, the bucket, the drain hose, the filter, and the clearance. It does not repair the dehumidifier, and it does not open the sealed system.

Speak to the manufacturer if the bucket stays empty after every check on this page. Speak to the manufacturer if a fault code stays on the display after you reset the dehumidifier.

Do not open the sealed system of the dehumidifier, because refrigerant inside can injure you. Call the manufacturer or a certified technician for a fault code that names a fault in this system.

Stop the dehumidifier if you see smoke or smell burned plastic near it. Disconnect the dehumidifier from the power supply, and speak to the manufacturer.

Compare your model number with the CPSC recall list before you continue work on an old dehumidifier.

Common questions

My dehumidifier is running, but the bucket never fills up. What's wrong?

Usually nothing is broken. The most common causes are a humidity target set above the room's real humidity, so the compressor never switches on; a room that is too cold, which lets frost form on the coil and stops moisture removal; and a connected drain hose sending the water somewhere other than the bucket, which is normal, not a fault. This page checks each of these in order, along with the filter and the clearance around the unit, before it tells you when to call for service.

Why does my dehumidifier stop collecting water when the room gets cold?

ENERGY STAR states that frost can form on a compressor dehumidifier's coil once the air temperature drops below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the frost can make the compressor cycle on and off repeatedly without removing moisture from the air. ENERGY STAR's own guidance is to switch the unit off and let it defrost before you use it again. A dehumidifier running in a cold basement or an unheated garage is one of the most common reasons this page exists.

How cold is too cold for a dehumidifier?

ENERGY STAR's own figure of 65 degrees Fahrenheit, around 18 degrees Celsius, is a general guidance threshold for compressor dehumidifiers as a category, not a rating for your specific model. Two brands read for this page publish their own numbers for their own products: Frigidaire gives 41 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit as its operating range, and Danby notes that frost can form on its own models below around 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Read your own documentation for the figure that applies to your machine, and consider a unit rated for lower temperatures if your space stays cold.

The bucket is empty, but I have a drain hose connected. Is that normal?

Yes. A connected continuous drain hose sends the water to a floor drain, a sump pump, or a container instead of to the bucket, so an empty bucket is exactly what you should see. Look for water at the open end of the hose instead. If no water leaves either end of the hose, a separate page on this site covers connecting the hose correctly and clearing a kink, a high point, or ice.

I set a humidity level, but the dehumidifier barely runs. Why?

The target may be set above the room's actual relative humidity, and a compressor dehumidifier stops removing moisture once the room reaches the target you gave it. Read the room's real humidity with a hygrometer and compare it with the target on the humidistat. A separate page on this site walks through choosing an actual target number and checking that the room really reaches it.

Could my dehumidifier be too small for my room?

It is worth checking. A dehumidifier sized for a small room removes little visible water in a large or very damp space, even while running correctly, and the difference can look like a fault. A separate page on this site walks through matching a pint-per-day rating to your room's size and condition using ENERGY STAR's own chart.

When should I stop troubleshooting and call for service?

Once you have checked the setting, the room temperature, the bucket, the drain hose, and the filter and clearance, and the bucket still stays empty, speak to the manufacturer. The same applies if a fault code stays on the display after a reset: this page does not list every manufacturer's codes, but a separate page on this site does. Never open the sealed cooling system yourself, and check your model number against the CPSC recall list if the machine is old.

Revision history

Current version 1 · updated 2026-08-04 · next review due 2027-08-04

  1. v1 · 2026-08-04First draft, scaffolded as doc_type diagnostic per the backlog note. Built entirely from tier-1 sources already registered in data/sources.json from prior dehumidifier records on this site, each independently re-read on 2026-08-04 by direct fetch except the Danby PDF, which relies on the existing registry entry's extraction (this session's own fetch of that PDF returned only document structure, not extractable text). ENERGY STAR's 65 degrees Fahrenheit frost threshold is published as the general, verified specification the backlog note asked for; Frigidaire's 41-89F operating range and Danby's below-41F frost note are kept as brand-specific, unverified figures routed to the manufacturer, because they are different products' own ratings rather than a disagreement about one number. No new sources were needed for this record, so the accompanying sources-additions file is an empty array. This record deliberately does not repeat the drain-hose connection procedure, the room-sizing chart, or the brand-by-brand fault code table: each already has, or is drafted to have, its own page on this site, and this diagnostic names them and routes to them rather than duplicating their content. The continuous-drain-hose procedure page is not yet published, so it is described in prose only and is not included in 'related' until it publishes.

Corrections to this page are listed in the public corrections log. Reports that are credible and not yet verified are listed in the public errata register, and an open one renders above the step it concerns.
