Recall notice
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 23-262
On 16 August 2023 the CPSC announced the recall of about 1.56 million Gree-made dehumidifiers, sold under the Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze brands and manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. The notice states that the dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards, and reports at least 23 fires, 688 overheating incidents and $168,000 in property damage. Consumers are told to immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact Gree for a refund. If your machine is old, check its model number against the CPSC list before you work on its drain.

Common questions
Why does my dehumidifier's bucket still fill up even though I connected a drain hose?
The most common cause is a hose that rises above its starting point somewhere along its run, because a gravity drain moves water only downhill and any high point traps it. A kink, a squashed section, or a clogged drain port inside the appliance can also stop the flow completely. Danby's own troubleshooting guidance for its gravity-drain models names a loose hose connection and a removed drain cover as causes of water on the floor instead of in the hose. Check the full length of the hose for a bend before you assume the appliance itself has failed. If your model has a built-in pump instead of a gravity drain, a blocked pump inlet or a poorly seated bucket can cause the same symptom.
What size hose do I need for a continuous drain?
It depends on your model, and this is one of the numbers this page will not generalize for you. Danby's own owner's manual for its DDR020BJWDB-ME, DDR030BJWDB-ME, DDR040BJWDB-ME and DDR050BJWDB-ME models calls for a standard garden hose with an inside diameter of at least 5/16 inch, and gives a maximum hose length of 1.8 m (6 ft) for those specific models. Your own model's installation instructions give the fitting and the length that apply to your dehumidifier. A hose that is longer than your manufacturer allows can leave standing water inside it.
Can my continuous drain hose run uphill?
Not if your dehumidifier drains by gravity alone. Danby states plainly that its continuous drain is fed only by gravity, and that any bend or upward run in the hose stops the water from draining. A dehumidifier with a built-in pump can move water up and away from the appliance, but only up to the maximum lift height your own documentation gives for that pump. Check whether your model has a pump before you plan the route for the hose.
Does my dehumidifier need a floor drain nearby?
A floor drain is the simplest destination for a continuous drain hose, but it is not the only one. Danby's own instructions say to direct the free end of the hose to a floor drain or to a large container instead. Whatever you choose, the container or the drain must sit lower than the drain outlet on the back of the appliance for a gravity model to work.
Why did my drain hose freeze or slow down in cold weather?
Frost can form inside a dehumidifier when the room temperature drops low enough, and Danby's own manual notes this can happen below about 5°C (41°F). The appliance defrosts itself automatically, and the compressor stops for a while as the fan keeps running. If the room stays cold, ice can also form inside the drain hose itself and block the flow of water until it thaws. Move the dehumidifier to a warmer space, or wait for the room to warm, before you assume the hose or the appliance has failed.
My dehumidifier shows a fault code even though I connected the drain hose. What now?
A fault code such as PU, P1 or E01 usually points to the pump or the drain hose on a pump model, but the exact letters and the correct response differ by manufacturer and even by model within the same brand. Frigidaire tells owners with a PU code to check that the pump drain hose is well connected and free of a kink, a blockage or ice. This page does not repeat a full fault code table; a separate page on this site indexes the codes that several manufacturers publish for their own machines. Clear the hose using the steps here, reconnect the dehumidifier, and check whether the code returns.
