Summary
A microwave oven is easy to clean, and once a year or so it is worth a proper look at its door. The cavity, the door and the control panel just need a soft cloth and mild soap or detergent — heating a cup of water first turns dried food into something you can wipe away in seconds. That part of the job takes most people under half an hour and needs nothing that is not already in the kitchen.
The other half of this page is the reason it exists. The door, the hinges, the latch and the seal are a federally regulated system that keeps microwave energy inside the oven while it runs, under a rule the FDA enforces (21 CFR 1030.10). A bent door, a loose hinge, a damaged latch or a torn seal is not a cosmetic fault — the FDA's own advice is to stop using the oven and contact the manufacturer, and this page does the same. Common questions
What's the best way to clean the inside of a microwave?
Heat a cup of water inside for two to five minutes first — Whirlpool and Samsung both use the steam this makes to loosen dried food before you wipe it away. After that, mild soap or a mild detergent on a soft cloth is what GE, Whirlpool and Samsung all recommend for the cavity, the door and the door seal. None of the three wants an abrasive pad, steel wool, ammonia or bleach anywhere near the unit — GE says ammonia and bleach can make the plastic brittle, and Samsung says abrasives and bleach will damage the finish and cause rust. Unplug the oven before you start, dry every surface afterward, and the whole job takes most people under half an hour.
Is it safe to use a microwave with a cracked door or a damaged seal?
No. The FDA is direct about this: it recommends not using an oven if the door doesn't close firmly or is bent, warped, or otherwise damaged, and says to contact the manufacturer if the door hinges, latches or seals are damaged. The door, the hinges, the latch and the seal are what keep microwave energy inside the oven while it runs, so damage to any of them is a genuine containment question, not a cosmetic one. This page does not repair or replace a damaged door — that is a manufacturer or a technician's job.
Can I test my own microwave for a radiation leak?
We looked, and there is no FDA or manufacturer instruction for a home leak test — the FDA's own guidance is entirely about inspecting the door, the hinges, the latch and the seal by eye, and contacting the manufacturer if any of them is damaged. We are not going to recommend a consumer leak-detector card or gadget on the strength of a product listing, because we could not verify one against a tier-1 source. If the door and the seal look right and the door closes firmly, the FDA's position is that the oven should not leak in any way that matters; if they do not, the fix is the manufacturer, not a home test.
Why does the seal or the area around my microwave door look dirty or grimy?
Splashes and dried food collect on the door seal and around the latch points every time something boils over, and Whirlpool names this directly as a problem: debris there can stop the door from closing and operating properly. Whirlpool also says to keep the strip where the door meets the frame clean, because soil buildup in that spot can cause arcing that damages the oven. Wipe both areas with a soft cloth and mild soap or detergent, the same method as the rest of the cavity, and dry them afterward.
My microwave door hinge or latch is broken. Can I fix it myself?
The CPSC advises against it: it warns against do-it-yourself microwave repairs, and its own data shows an annual average of two electrocution deaths among people attempting exactly this kind of repair, in the years it studied. The reason is that a part inside a microwave can hold an electrical charge strong enough to injure someone, even after the oven is unplugged — a risk that has nothing to do with how careful you are. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician for a hinge, a latch or a door repair, and do not remove the outer cabinet yourself.
How often should I clean a microwave?
None of the manufacturer documentation we checked gives a single interval for the whole oven — clean spills and splatters as they happen, since dried-on food is what makes the job harder later. Samsung is specific about two smaller parts: wash the turntable once a week and clean the roller rings once a month. Beyond that, check the door, the hinges, the latch and the seal for damage at the same time you clean, since that is the part of this job that actually matters for safety.
