It also covers the question a bottle of oven cleaner on the shopping list raises: is a spray-on chemical oven cleaner safe for your particular oven, or will it damage the coating? The honest answer is that it depends on the liner, and only your own use and care guide names your liner. GE Appliances, Whirlpool, and Samsung each say, in their own words, that a commercial oven cleaner damages a self-clean or a continuous-clean liner over time, and none of the three publishes an exception. None of them says a commercial oven cleaner is fine on an oven with neither coating, so this page does not print that as fact either. Decide which containers and coverings may be used in a microwave ovenThis page is a quick reference for what goes in a microwave oven safely and what does not — the everyday question of whether you can put metal in the microwave, whether a plastic container is microwave safe, or whether aluminum foil is ever allowed. It covers cookware, dishes and coverings such as plastic wrap, wax paper and paper towels, and it explains why metal and some plastics cause problems: an appliance failure (sparking, damage to the oven, or in rare cases fire) as well as a food one (melted plastic or food that will not heat evenly). The guidance here comes from the FDA and from microwave manufacturer Whirlpool's own published support pages, plus a real 2026 recall of cookware that caught fire in a microwave. For a specific dish or wrap with no microwave-safe mark, or for anything your own oven's manual says differently, follow your manual and the maker of the item — this page gives the general rule, not a guarantee for every product.   4. Decide why a dishwasher leaves a white film or grit on glasswareA dishwasher that leaves glasses cloudy, hazy, or gritty usually has one of two different problems, and telling them apart in under a minute changes what you do next. A hard water film is a coating of mineral or detergent residue sitting on the glass; a light rub with white vinegar dissolves it. Etching is permanent damage to the glass surface itself; the same rub does nothing, because there is no coating to remove. This page is a diagnostic: the vinegar rub test to sort one from the other, a cleaning method for a film, and what an etched glass means for how you keep using it. It does not repair the dishwasher and it does not install or adjust a water softener. Whirlpool's own support pages and GE Appliances' own support pages were both checked for this page, and they do not agree on what drives etching: Whirlpool names hard water as the primary cause, while GE Appliances ties it to a mismatch between the detergent dose and the water hardness, in either direction. This page prints both accounts rather than pick a favorite, and routes a reader who wants a firm answer to the dishwasher or the detergent manufacturer.   5. Decide why water is standing in the bottom of a dishwasherWater sitting in the bottom of a dishwasher after a cycle is not always a fault, and that is the first thing worth knowing. GE Appliances says that on its dishwashers without an ultra fine filter, one to two cups of clean water covering the bottom of the tub is normal, and that on models with one, water in the filter area is normal but should not cover the tub floor. Whirlpool's own troubleshooting reads the same sight differently and treats water slightly above the filter screen as a sign of a partial restriction. This page prints both, because the two makers are describing their own machines and a reader cannot tell which account applies without their own documentation. Then it walks the four checks you can make from outside the machine: the filter and the sump, the air gap on the sink, the garbage disposer, and the drain hose under the sink. What this page will not do is tell you to open the drain pump. Bosch's own troubleshooting says the most common reason a dishwasher stops draining is food debris clogged in the filter or the water pump — two different parts, and only one of them comes out by hand on every machine. Bosch sends you to your own owner's manual for the pump cover, because how you reach it differs from one dishwasher to the next. So this page names the pump as a genuine cause, gives you the three sounds Whirlpool ties to it, and then stops and routes you to a technician rather than guessing at your machine.   6. Find and clean the moisture sensor bars inside a clothes dryerMost clothes dryers with an automatic or "auto dry" setting use two small metal bars inside the drum to sense when a load is dry. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a thin film on these bars over time, and the film stops them from sensing moisture correctly. The dryer then behaves as if the load is already dry and the cycle ends early, so the clothes come out damp. This is one of the most common reasons a dryer "stops before the clothes are dry" or an "auto dry" setting seems to stop working, and the fix is usually a simple wipe. This page shows where manufacturers say to look for the sensor bars and how to clean them, using each maker's own instructions for its own dryers. Samsung, GE Appliances, Whirlpool and LG do not all agree on the exact spot or the cleaning agent, so this page names each position rather than picking one. How do I build a DIY box fan air purifier (Corsi-Rosenthal box) for wildfire smoke?Wildfire smoke that gets indoors is a real health risk, and a commercial air cleaner is not always available or affordable during a smoke event. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tested a low-cost stand-in: taping one or more furnace filters to a box fan. EPA's lab testing found a well-built version reduces wildfire smoke particles about as well as some commercial air cleaners, and safety testing by Underwriters Laboratories found no fire hazard in the box fan and filter combinations it tested. This page covers EPA's basic single-filter design and the higher-performing four-filter "Corsi-Rosenthal box," the fan age and certification rule the safety testing is built on, and how often to change the filter during a smoke event.   8. How do I change the light bulb inside my oven?An oven's interior light lets you check on food without opening the door, and like any light bulb it eventually burns out. It sits in a socket at the back or the side wall of the oven cavity, behind a small glass cover that keeps grease away from the glass. Replacing it is a short job, but it is not the same as changing a bulb in a lamp: the socket needs a special appliance bulb, not a standard household bulb, and the oven must be cool and disconnected from power before you touch the socket. The cover and the bulb type differ by manufacturer and even by model, so this page shows the methods GE, Whirlpool and Samsung publish for their own ranges and wall ovens rather than one universal set of steps. This page will not print a wattage, a voltage or a temperature rating that a manufacturer has not published for a specific bulb, and it will not guess at a maximum operating temperature for the bulb itself, even though that figure is a common search online — none of the manufacturer support pages this record is built on publish one. It will tell you what GE, Whirlpool and Samsung do publish: their standard appliance bulb is rated 40 watts, and GE's own halogen replacement bulbs are rated 120/130 volts and no more than 50 watts.   9. How long should you wait before plugging in a refrigerator after it is moved or delivered?A refrigerator that has just been delivered or carried between rooms should not go straight onto power. The compressor holds a small reservoir of lubricating oil, and if the unit was tipped or laid on its side, that oil can end up in the wrong place. Switch it on too soon and the oil can strain or damage the compressor before the refrigerator has run a single cycle. Every major manufacturer publishes a recommended standing time to let the oil settle back — the disagreement is in the number. Search for that number online and you will find two hours, four hours and twenty-four hours, often on the same page, with no source attached. We read the manufacturers directly. GE ties the wait to how long the unit was on its side. LG and Samsung each give a flat number instead, and Samsung asks for a wait even after upright transport. Whirlpool ties it to which cooling fluid the unit holds, and its own figures run from fifteen minutes to twenty-four hours depending on that.   10. How to backflush an espresso machine group head and clean the portafilter basketBackflushing pushes water back through the group head to clean the valve and the shower screen of built-up coffee oil, using a blind disc that blocks the basket and a cleaning tablet made for the job. It is not the same as descaling, which dissolves limescale out of the boiler with a completely different chemical, and Breville's own documentation is explicit that the two are separate. The portafilter and its filter basket need attention too, and that part applies to every machine: a rinse after use, and an occasional soak when the holes clog with old coffee oil. Not every espresso machine can run a water-only backflush. The feature needs a three-way valve, and a lever machine typically has none. The button sequence, the cleaning tablet, the soak time and the cycle length are all set by the machine's own maker, and we read manuals from two of them and found real differences even in how long the filter basket soaks.   11. How to change the belt on an upright vacuum when the brush stops spinningA smell of burning rubber, a brush roll that has stopped turning, and a vacuum that pushes dirt around instead of picking it up are all the same fault: the drive belt has stretched, slipped off or snapped. On most uprights the belt is a rubber loop under a screwed plate on the underside of the machine, it costs a few pounds, and changing it takes half an hour with one screwdriver. Two things on this page matter more than the belt itself. The first is that the machine must be disconnected from the electrical supply before the plate comes off — a brush roll that starts while your fingers are around it is a hand injury, and on a cordless upright that means taking the battery out, not just checking the cord. How to change the filter on a Dyson Purifier Cool and reset the filter lightChanging the filter on a Dyson Purifier Cool is about ten minutes of work, and the step people skip is the last one: resetting the filter life. Miss it and the machine keeps counting down from where the old filter left off, so the screen tells you the new filter is nearly spent. The other thing worth knowing before you order anything is that this machine ships in three filter configurations — one combined HEPA+Carbon filter, a separate HEPA and a separate carbon filter, or a HEPA+Carbon filter alongside a permanent catalytic filter on the Formaldehyde model — and the reset is done with a different button depending on which you have. Every step carries a page link into Dyson's own user manual, so you can check any instruction against the manufacturer's document in one click. Nothing on this page is copied from that manual.   13. How to change the water filter in a fridge with a water dispenser or icemakerThe filter cartridge behind the grille or inside the fridge is a consumable, and it is the one piece of maintenance on a refrigerator that has a direct effect on what you drink. The EPA puts it plainly: a filter is only effective if it is maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions for how long it lasts before it needs replacing. The physical job is about fifteen minutes, needs no tools on most models, and the fiddly part is not the fitting but the flushing. This page will not tell you which filter to buy, and that is deliberate. Filter parts are bound to the model, not to the brand: LG alone lists six different filter parts for its own refrigerators, and GE's own replacement instructions apply to a named list of model prefixes rather than to all of its fridges. So the page sends you to your model number instead of guessing a part number, which is the failure that ends with a filter that does not seat and a puddle under the fridge.   14. How to check and replace the fill hoses on a washing machineThe two hoses that feed a washing machine are under household water pressure every minute of every day, whether or not the machine is washing anything. A drain hose only carries water while a pump is working; a fill hose is loaded all the time, and when one lets go the water does not stop until somebody closes the tap. That is why a burst washer hose is one of the commonest large domestic water claims, and why the failure is so unfair: it is driven by age and by rubber that has hardened out of sight behind the machine, not by anything you did. Whirlpool's own installation instructions say to replace the inlet hoses every 5 years to reduce the risk of hose failure, and GE Appliances says the same thing in two separate support articles. The job itself is about half an hour with a bucket, a towel and a pair of pliers. Two things on this page are deliberately not numbers. Nobody publishes a tightening torque for a washer hose coupling — Whirlpool tells you to turn it by hand until it is seated and then give it an additional 2/3 turn with pliers, and that instruction is what this page passes on rather than inventing a figure to go with it. Water supply pressure limits are set by your own machine's manual and they are not the same from brand to brand: Whirlpool's instructions require 20 to 100 psi, and LG's own two support pages give two different upper limits for LG machines, 116 psi on one and 80 psi on the other.   15. How to check if your dishwasher drain hose has a high loopA dishwasher's drain hose has one difficult job: get used water out of the tub without ever letting sink water or garbage disposer water flow back in. The part that stops that backward flow is either a loop of hose raised high under the counter, or a small air gap fitting mounted on the sink deck next to the faucet. This page shows you how to find that loop or fitting under your kitchen sink, check that it is doing its job, and test for the dirty water that shows up when it is not. It needs a flashlight and a tape measure, and takes about twenty minutes. What this page will not do is hand you one loop height that fits every dishwasher, because the manufacturers do not agree. Whirlpool's own guidance gives at least 20 inches from the floor; GE Appliances publishes a 32-inch loop when no air gap is used. Both are printed here, with their sources, so you can compare your own installation against a real number instead of a guess — and then check the installation instructions for your specific model, because that document is the one that actually governs it.   16. How to check if your oven runs hot or cold, and fix the temperature settingA number on the oven display is not a promise about the air inside the cavity. Many ranges and wall ovens with an electronic control also carry a hidden temperature offset, sometimes called a calibration setting, that lets you nudge the indicated temperature closer to what the oven actually produces. This page shows how to measure the real temperature with an oven thermometer, read correctly across a full heating cycle, and how to open and set the offset control once you know the difference. It also tells you something most kitchen advice leaves out: Whirlpool and Samsung both publish, in their own support documentation, that a single oven-thermometer reading can be misleading, because the heating element cycles on and off and most thermometers react slowly to the change. Their alternative is a bake test — baking a familiar food and judging the oven by the result rather than by a dial. This page gives you both methods, so you can use the one you trust, or use them together. How to check that your stove or range has an anti-tip bracket and won't tip overA free-standing gas or electric range that is not anchored can tip forward if enough weight lands on an open oven door — a child climbing up, a heavy pot, or an adult leaning on it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says plainly that a range anti-tip bracket can save you or your child from serious injury or death, and it received reports of 13 fatalities associated with instability and tipover of stoves, ovens, and ranges between 2000 and 2008, many involving children younger than 10 years old. This page shows you how to find the anti-tip bracket behind or under your range and how to tell whether the range is actually held in it. This is a look-only check. It does not cover moving a range that may not be anchored, and it does not print one screw size or one fastening method for every bracket, because the bracket, its fastener, and whether it goes into the wall or the floor are set by your range's manufacturer, not by one general rule.   18. How to clean a clogged dryer vent and lint ductLint gets past the lint trap on every load, and it settles in the duct between the dryer and the outside wall. As the duct fills, the air slows, heat builds, and the dryer runs longer to do the same work. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failure to clean was the leading contributing factor in home clothes dryer fires between 2018 and 2020, at 31 percent of them. The CPSC is blunt about the mechanism: lint blocks the airflow, heat collects, and a fire can start. This page covers a dryer that vents through a nearby outside wall, where the exhaust hood is within reach from where you stand on the ground. It does not cover a duct that ends at the roof, a duct you cannot reach, or any dryer that runs on gas — moving a gas dryer is how the connector behind it gets damaged, and that is a job with a professional in it.   19. How to clean a greasy range hood filterThe metal filter under a range hood traps grease before it coats your cabinets, and it sits in the path of every bit of steam and smoke from the cooktop below. Left dirty, that same filter is a grease-loaded surface directly above a heat source: NFPA's own research on home cooking fires found that a grease hood or duct exhaust fan has the highest injury rate per 1,000 fires of any cooking-equipment category it tracks, even though fires involving hoods are less common than fires that start on the burner itself. Not every hood filter is the same, and that difference is the reason this page exists. A metal mesh or a metal baffle filter is washable, by hand or in a dishwasher, and manufacturers do not fully agree on how often: GE Appliances says about every six months for normal cooking, Broan-NuTone's own guidance says every three to six months, so this page gives both figures and sends you to your own owner's manual rather than picking one. A charcoal (carbon) filter, found in a hood that recirculates air back into the kitchen instead of venting outside, is a different part entirely and is never washed.   20. How to clean a microwave and check if the door and seal are damagedA microwave oven is easy to clean, and once a year or so it is worth a proper look at its door. The cavity, the door and the control panel just need a soft cloth and mild soap or detergent — heating a cup of water first turns dried food into something you can wipe away in seconds. That part of the job takes most people under half an hour and needs nothing that is not already in the kitchen. The other half of this page is the reason it exists. The door, the hinges, the latch and the seal are a federally regulated system that keeps microwave energy inside the oven while it runs, under a rule the FDA enforces (21 CFR 1030.10). A bent door, a loose hinge, a damaged latch or a torn seal is not a cosmetic fault — the FDA's own advice is to stop using the oven and contact the manufacturer, and this page does the same.   21. How to clean the condenser coils under or behind a refrigeratorThe condenser coils are the part of a fridge that dumps heat back out into your kitchen, and on some models they sit in the open where dust, pet hair and cooking grease settle on them. When they load up, the compressor runs longer and hotter to do the same amount of work. The job takes about forty minutes of which most is waiting, needs nothing more than a vacuum cleaner and a coil brush, and the only real skill involved is not bending anything. The first thing this page does is send you to your own documentation to find out whether your fridge has coils you are supposed to touch at all. Plenty do not. GE Appliances says most of its models built since 2001 have an enclosed condenser that never needs cleaning, and Whirlpool says some models can only be cleaned by a certified technician. How to clean the drain filter on a front loading washing machineAlmost every front-load washing machine has a filter in front of the drain pump, behind a small panel at the bottom of the machine. It catches the coins, hair clips, buttons and underwire that come out of pockets, along with a surprising quantity of lint. Most owners never open it, and the first they hear of it is a machine that will not drain, a drain error code, or a smell that will not shift. The job itself is easy and needs no tools. The part people get wrong is the water: there is more of it behind that panel than anyone expects, and it arrives on the kitchen floor if you unscrew the filter before you drain the hose. This page puts the draining first for that reason.   23. How to clean the lint filter in a tumble dryerEverybody knows to pull the fluff off the filter. Far fewer people know that detergent and fabric softener leave an invisible film on the mesh that fluff will not lift, and that this film is what turns a one-cycle load into a two-cycle load. Whirlpool publishes a separate six-monthly job for it — hot water, a nylon brush and liquid detergent — and that job is the reason this page exists as something more than "empty the fluff". The stakes are not just drying time.   24. How to clean the rubber door seal on a fridgeThe soft strip around the edge of a fridge door is the only thing standing between your food and the room. It collects crumbs, spilled milk and a film of grease, and in the fold behind its lip that mixture goes black. A dirty seal is not just unpleasant to look at: dirt on the sealing face holds the door open a fraction, and a fridge that is running against a permanent air leak works harder and stays warmer than the dial claims. The job takes about half an hour and needs a cloth, a bowl and nothing else. What this page will not do is tell you what to put on the rubber, and that sounds like a dodge but is not. GE Appliances tells you to wipe the gasket with warm water and baking soda and says in the same breath not to use anything containing detergent. Whirlpool tells you to clean the gasket with a damp cloth and mild soap. LG tells you to use a sponge or a toothbrush with detergent, and Samsung tells you to use dish soap. Three of the four prescribe the thing the fourth prohibits, so the answer is written in your own manual and nowhere else.   25. How to clean the rubber door seal on a front loading washing machineThe rubber ring around the door of a front-loading washer is the part that stays wet. Water, lint and detergent sit in the fold at the bottom of it after every wash, and that is where the black speckling, the grey slime and the smell that survives three hot washes all come from. It is also where socks, coins, hair grips and the occasional piece of broken glass end up. The job is ten minutes with a cloth, and nothing about it is difficult. The difficult part is chemical, and it is the reason this page exists. Whirlpool tells you to wipe the seal with a dilute chlorine bleach solution. LG tells you to use oxygen bleach at roughly a fiftieth of that strength. Bosch tells you not to put chlorine near the seal at all because it degrades the rubber. GE offers bleach or vinegar and adds a rinse the other two do not. How to connect and unclog a dehumidifier drain hose so it doesn't fill the bucketA dehumidifier with a continuous drain lets it run for days without you emptying the bucket, using either gravity through a garden hose or a built-in pump. The most common reason a connected drain hose still leaves you emptying the bucket is not a broken machine: it is a hose with a high point, a kink, or a clogged drain port, all of which stop the water from leaving. This page walks you through connecting a gravity drain hose or a built-in pump drain hose for the first time, and through finding and clearing the blockage when a hose that used to work has stopped. What this page will not do is hand you one hose thread, one maximum hose length, or one pump lift height that fits every dehumidifier, because manufacturers do not agree and the fitting differs by model. Danby's own owner's manual gives real numbers for its own gravity-drain models, printed here with that source, and Frigidaire and GE Appliances both publish their own troubleshooting steps for a pump model that will not drain. Check the installation instructions for your own model before you buy a hose or extend one upward.
